Day trips from Madrid

The best day trips from Madrid are Toledo and Segovia, both about half an hour away by fast train, with Córdoba as the long-distance option; Salamanca is the hardest, with only four fast trains a day. Ávila, El Escorial and Aranjuez are half days, and we say so on each sheet.

One, two or three free days in Madrid

Three ways to use your free days, from the single trip we would pick to a full set.

1 free day

One free day: go to Toledo

With one day, pick Toledo. It has the most to see within walking distance and the ride is 34 minutes from Puerta de Atocha. Start at the cathedral at 10:00, cross the Jewish quarter before lunch and end at the San Martín bridge. Buy both train legs days ahead, because seats run out. If your free day is a Sunday, go to Segovia instead.

Two days: Toledo and Segovia

Give one day to each of the two fast trips. Put Toledo on a day from Monday to Saturday, since its cathedral only opens at 14:00 on Sundays, and Segovia on the other, where the Alcázar opens daily at 10:00. The trains leave from different stations: Puerta de Atocha for Toledo, Chamartín for Segovia. Both use Avant trains at € 13.90 each way with reserved seats, so book the four legs in one go.

3 free days

Three days: add a royal half day

Keep Toledo and Segovia as full days and add El Escorial as a half day, which leaves you an afternoon in Madrid. The Cercanías needs no booking and costs € 4.05 each way, so use it as the flexible day, on any day except Monday. Do Toledo first, while you are fresh for the hills. If budget matters less than variety, replace El Escorial with Córdoba on the 08:00 AVE, and avoid June to August for that one.

When to go: day trips from Madrid by season

What the weather does, how full it gets and which trips work best in each season.

Spring

Mar-May
Weather
Highs rise from 16 °C in March to 23 °C in May, with mornings of 6 to 12 °C. April and May each bring about seven rainy days. Daylight grows from 12 to 14.5 hours.
Crowds
Busy Easter week and the 1-2 May holidays fill Toledo and Segovia. Córdoba is busiest in the first half of May, during the patio festival.
What to wear
A T-shirt, a jumper and a light waterproof. Segovia, Ávila and Cuenca sit around 1,000 m and run cooler than Madrid, so add a warm layer for the morning.
Skip
Ávila's walls still close on Mondays and at 18:00 until 26 March. Skip Valencia from 15 to 19 March unless you came for Fallas.

Summer

Jun-Aug
Weather
Highs of 29 °C in June and 32 to 33 °C in July and August, with nights near 19 °C. Rain falls on two or three days a month. June has 15 hours of daylight.
Crowds
Busy Coach groups fill Toledo and Segovia between 11:00 and 15:00. Madrid itself empties in August, and so do the Cercanías trains to El Escorial.
What to wear
Light, loose clothes, a hat, sunscreen and a refillable bottle. Carry something to cover your shoulders in the cathedrals and the Mosque-Cathedral. Swimwear for Valencia.
Skip
Córdoba and Toledo after 13:00 in July and August. Córdoba's Alcázar closes in the early afternoon then, and Aranjuez's gardens are too hot at midday.

Autumn

Sep-Nov
Weather
September still reaches 26 °C. October drops to 20 °C and November to 13 °C, each with about seven rainy days. By late November the sun sets before 18:00.
Crowds
Busy September and the 12 October long weekend are busy in Toledo, Segovia and Córdoba. Alcalá de Henares fills for its Cervantes week around 9 October.
What to wear
Summer clothes work in September. From mid October bring a jumper, a waterproof jacket and closed shoes with grip, because wet cobbles in Toledo and Cuenca are slippery.
Skip
From 25 October Ávila's walls close on Mondays and at 18:00. From November Segovia's Alcázar shuts at 18:00, so late starts cost you sights.

Winter

Dec-Feb
Weather
Highs of 10 to 12 °C and lows near 3 °C in Madrid, with frost on the plateau towns. Five or six rainy days a month. December has barely 9.5 hours of daylight.
Crowds
Quiet The quiet season everywhere. The exceptions are the 6-8 December long weekend and the Christmas fortnight, when Toledo and Segovia fill with Spanish visitors.
What to wear
A proper winter coat, scarf and gloves for Ávila, Segovia, Cuenca and Salamanca, where it can snow. Closed shoes. Valencia and Córdoba need only a mid-weight jacket.
Skip
Aranjuez, whose gardens are bare. Ávila on a Monday, with the walls shut. Monuments close at 18:00, so no half-day trip can start after lunch.

What to eat along the way

Segovia and Ávila are roast country: suckling pig and judiones beans in Segovia, a thick T-bone steak and paprika mashed potatoes in Ávila. Toledo cooks game and carcamusas, a pork and tomato stew, and sells marzipan everywhere. Salamanca means Guijuelo ham and hornazo, a meat-filled pie. Córdoba means cold salmorejo and flamenquín. In Valencia, eat paella at lunch, never at night. Alcalá's bars give a free tapa with each drink. Take a picnic to Aranjuez's gardens and the El Escorial woods.

Before you go

  • Stations differ: Puerta de Atocha for Toledo and Córdoba, Chamartín for Segovia and Salamanca, Príncipe Pío for Ávila, Atocha Cercanías for El Escorial, Aranjuez and Alcalá.
  • Avant, Alvia and AVE trains have a luggage scan before boarding and gates that close a few minutes before departure. Reach the platform area 20 minutes early.
  • Monday closes El Escorial, the Aranjuez palace, the Cervantes house in Alcalá and Cuenca's abstract art museum. Use Mondays for Toledo, Segovia, Salamanca or Córdoba.
  • Avant seats to Toledo sell out on Saturdays and holiday weekends. Buy the outbound and the return together, as early as Renfe opens the date.
  • Check Renfe's Cercanías notices the evening before. Works on the Atocha and Chamartín approaches change platforms and add changes such as the one at Villaverde Bajo.
