Day trip from Madrid Toledo
A walled hilltop city above the Tagus with a Gothic cathedral, two medieval synagogues and El Greco's best-known painting, 34 minutes from Madrid by Avant train.
Is Toledo worth a day trip from Madrid?
Go. Take the whole day.
Yes, and it is the easiest full day out of Madrid. The Avant train takes 34 minutes from Puerta de Atocha and costs € 13.90 each way, a fixed fare. The catch is seats: there are only 15 trains on a weekday and 10 on a Saturday, and they sell out, so book both legs before you go. The cathedral costs € 12 and opens at 10:00 from Monday to Saturday. On Sundays it only opens at 14:00, which wrecks a morning visit. Expect steep cobbled streets all day.

What to see and do in Toledo
- 01
Toledo Cathedral
A 13th-century Gothic cathedral with a sacristy that works as a small gallery, hung with El Greco's Disrobing of Christ. Allow 75 to 90 minutes with the audio guide.
- 02
Santo Tomé
A parish church you enter for a single painting, El Greco's Burial of the Count of Orgaz, which hangs just inside the door. Ten to fifteen minutes is enough, plus the queue.
- 03
The two synagogues
Santa María la Blanca has white horseshoe arches and opens daily. El Tránsito, five minutes away, houses the Sephardic Museum and is closed on Mondays. Allow 30 to 45 minutes each.
- 04
San Juan de los Reyes
A monastery founded by Isabella and Ferdinand, with a two-storey Gothic cloister. The chains on the outside wall came from freed Christian prisoners. Allow 30 minutes.
- 05
San Martín bridge and the river path
A fortified 14th-century bridge over the Tagus gorge at the western edge of town. Cross it for the view back to the city, then return. About 30 minutes on foot.

How to spend the day
Take the 09:15 from Puerta de Atocha and you are in Toledo at 09:49. Go up to Plaza de Zocodover and be at the cathedral when it opens at 10:00. Santo Tomé and the two synagogues in the Jewish quarter fill the rest of the morning. Have lunch, then walk down to San Juan de los Reyes and the San Martín bridge. Trains back leave at 17:23, 18:45 and 19:25. The last one on a weekday is at 21:37.
Toledo in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustFrom June to August Toledo is hotter than Madrid, often 35 °C or more by 15:00, and the stone streets hold the heat. Do the outdoor walking before 12:00 and spend the early afternoon inside the cathedral and the synagogues, which stay cool. Shade is scarce on the climb from the station. Evenings are long, so a later train home makes sense.
Winter
December to FebruaryFrom December to February the town is quiet and every monument stays open, with El Tránsito and Santa María la Blanca closing about an hour earlier. Mornings often start in fog rising off the Tagus, and it lifts by noon. Expect 10 °C at best. It is still a full, worthwhile day, with the shortest queues of the year.
How crowded it gets
Very busy- Busiest
- Easter week, Corpus Christi, Sep-Oct weekends, 11:00-15:00
- Quietest
- Weekdays Nov-Feb; any day before 10:30 or after 16:30
Coach groups arrive around 11:00 and walk the same line from Zocodover to Santo Tomé. Be at the cathedral at 10:00, then see Santo Tomé either straight after or late in the afternoon, when the groups have gone.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
Shoes with thick soles and grip: the cobbles are uneven and steep, and slippery when wet. Cover shoulders in the cathedral. In summer bring a hat and water, in winter a warm coat for the fog.
What to eat
Local plates are carcamusas, a pork and tomato stew, partridge stewed in vinegar, and venison. Marzipan is the thing to take home, sold by convents and pastry shops. Menus around the cathedral and Zocodover cost more than those in the streets near Santo Tomé or outside the Bisagra gate.
What you will spend
The train is fixed at € 13.90 each way and the cathedral is € 12. The other monuments charge small separate fees, which add up if you enter five or six. Walking the streets, the bridges and the viewpoints is free. The coach from € 29 is the cheapest way there.
How to get the most out of the day
- Free escalators climb from Paseo de Recaredo, by the Bisagra gate, into the old town. They save most of the hill coming from the station.
- A tourist wristband covers seven smaller monuments, with Santo Tomé, San Juan de los Reyes and Santa María la Blanca. Buy it for three or more.
- Corpus Christi, on a Thursday in late May or June, fills the centre with a morning procession. Trains sell out weeks ahead.
- The wide view of the city is from the Mirador del Valle, across the river. The walk is long and uphill, so take a taxi.
How long do you need in Toledo?
Plan 6–8 h on site, plus 34 min of travel each way from Madrid.
When is Toledo closed?
None. Sundays open from 14:00 only; shut 1 Jan and 25 Dec. Best time: Monday to Saturday; spring and autumn for the heat.
