Day trip from Madrid Aranjuez
A Bourbon royal palace with large formal gardens along the Tagus, about 48 minutes south of Atocha by Cercanías train.
Is Aranjuez worth a day trip from Madrid?
A cheap half day. Skip it in winter.
A pleasant half day, and the cheapest trip on this list, but not a priority. The Cercanías takes about 48 minutes from Atocha and the palace ticket is € 9. The palace interior needs 1 to 2 hours. The gardens are what make the trip, so come from April to October and skip it on a cold or wet day. The palace is closed every Monday. On the dates we checked, the journey from Atocha included a change at Villaverde Bajo, so read the departure board. If you have already seen the Royal Palace in Madrid, the rooms will feel familiar.

What to see and do in Aranjuez
- 01
Royal Palace
The Bourbon spring residence, visited with an audio guide. The Porcelain Room, lined floor to ceiling with glazed Chinese-style panels, is the room to slow down in. Allow 60 to 90 minutes.
- 02
Parterre and Island Garden
Formal gardens beside the palace, on an island between the Tagus and a canal, with stone fountains under old plane trees. Free to enter. Allow 45 minutes.
- 03
Prince's Garden
A landscaped park of about 150 hectares running along the river, with peacocks, a Chinese pond and avenues of tall planes. Free. Walking to the far end and back takes two hours.
- 04
Royal Barges Museum
A boathouse inside the Prince's Garden holding the gilded pleasure boats the royal family used on the Tagus. It is small: 20 minutes. Check that your palace ticket includes it.
How to spend the day
Take the 09:08 Cercanías from Atocha, change at Villaverde Bajo and arrive in Aranjuez at 09:57. Walk to the palace for the 10:00 opening and see the rooms first. Then the Parterre and Island gardens beside the river, and the longer walk through the Prince's Garden if the weather holds. Lunch in town. Trains back run two or three times an hour, so you can be in Madrid by 15:00 or 16:00.
Aranjuez in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustFrom June to August Aranjuez is hot, with highs of 33 °C or more, and the riverside brings mosquitoes at dusk. See the palace at 10:00 and walk the gardens straight after, under the trees, then leave after lunch. The gardens stay open late into the evening. The Strawberry Train does not run in July, August or September.
Winter
December to FebruaryFrom December to February the palace is open as usual, Tuesday to Sunday, but the gardens are bare, the fountains are often off and river fog lingers until midday. The Prince's Garden closes around 18:30. With the gardens out of the picture, you are paying for 90 minutes of palace rooms. Pick El Escorial instead.
How crowded it gets
Quiet- Busiest
- Apr-May and Oct weekends, especially Strawberry Train days
- Quietest
- Tue-Fri all year
Aranjuez is rarely crowded. The palace rooms get tight only when the Strawberry Train passengers arrive around 11:00 on spring and autumn weekends. Enter at 10:00 or go on a weekday and you will have space.

Aranjuez is the end of line C-3. In early October 2026 the timetable sends you on a C-4 train from Atocha to Villaverde Bajo, then across to the C-3. The wait there is usually 3 to 8 minutes. The palace is a flat walk from Aranjuez station.

The only coach product that includes Aranjuez also crams in Chinchón and Toledo. You get a guided palace visit and 30 minutes free in Aranjuez, then 1 hour 45 in Toledo. Too rushed to recommend unless you want three stops ticked off in one day.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
Trainers, because the garden paths are packed earth and you may cover 6 to 8 km. A hat, sunscreen and insect repellent from May to September. After rain the paths turn muddy, so skip pale shoes.
What to eat
Aranjuez grows strawberries and asparagus, both in season from April to June. Stalls and cafes sell strawberries with cream. Restaurants sit between the palace and the market on Calle Almíbar and along the river. The gardens are a good place for a picnic bought at the Mercado de Abastos.
What you will spend
The cheapest trip from Madrid: € 4.05 each way by Cercanías and € 9 for the palace. All three gardens are free, so a picnic day with no palace costs only the train. The Strawberry Train and the tourist road train are optional extras.
How to get the most out of the day
- The Strawberry Train, a heritage service from Madrid's railway museum, runs on spring and autumn weekends only. It sells out, and it fixes your return time.
- Like other Patrimonio Nacional sites, the palace has free entry on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons for EU and Ibero-American citizens with ID.
- The Prince's Garden has several gates along Calle de la Reina. Enter by the one nearest the palace and leave by another to avoid doubling back.
- The first weekend of September brings the Motín de Aranjuez festival, with costumed re-enactments in front of the palace and a fairground.
