Day trips from Lisbon

The best day trips from Lisbon are Sintra and Évora, which each fill a day and work by train, plus Cascais for a half day by the sea; Nazaré is the hardest, a long coach ride that deserves a night. Óbidos and Fátima are half days, and Arrábida needs a tour or a car.

One, two or three free days in Lisbon

Three ways to use your free days, from the single trip we would pick to a full set.

1 free day

One day: Sintra, early start

With one free day, go to Sintra. The train from Rossio takes 40 minutes and the day fills itself: Pena Palace in the morning, lunch in the old town, then Quinta da Regaleira or the Moorish Castle. Book the earliest Pena slot before you leave Lisbon and be on a train by 08:00. The warning: after 10:00 the 434 bus queue can cost you an hour.

Two days: palaces, then the Alentejo

Give one day to Sintra and the other to Évora, 1 hour 43 minutes by Intercidades from Oriente. They do not repeat each other: one is forest and royal palaces, the other a walled city with a Roman temple and the Chapel of Bones. Put Sintra on a weekday, when the trains run more often and the hill is calmer. Reserve the Évora seats first, because there are only five trains on weekdays and three at weekends, and the 16:51 back fills up.

3 free days

Three days: add a seaside half day

Do Sintra and Évora as full days and put Cascais between them as a rest. Leave Cais do Sodré around 09:40, walk the old centre and out to Boca do Inferno, eat lunch near the beach and be back in Lisbon by mid-afternoon. You can get off at Belém on the way home, since it is on the same line. In winter, swap Cascais for Mafra, which is indoors and shut only on Tuesdays. Check weekdays before you fix the order: Évora's weekend trains start later, at 09:58.

When to go: day trips from Lisbon by season

What the weather does, how full it gets and which trips work best in each season.

Spring

Mar-May
Weather
Highs rise from 19 °C in March to 23 °C in May, with nights at 11-14 °C. Rain falls on 6-8 days a month. Daylight grows from 12 hours to more than 14.
Crowds
Busy Sintra is already busy at weekends and in Easter week. Fátima fills on 12 and 13 May. Weekdays in March are calm everywhere.
What to wear
A light waterproof jacket over a jumper and closed shoes with grip for wet cobbles. Sintra's hill runs a few degrees cooler than Lisbon, so carry one extra layer.
Skip
Arrábida without a car or the tour, since the beach buses have not started. The sea at Cascais and Nazaré is still cold.

Works bestSintraÉvoraTomarSetúbal and Arrábida

Summer

Jun-Aug
Weather
Highs of 26-29 °C in Lisbon and nights near 18 °C, with almost no rain: one or two wet days a month. Inland Évora and Tomar often pass 35 °C. Sunset is around 21:00.
Crowds
Very busy Pena Palace, the 434 bus and Óbidos' main street are packed from 10:30 to 16:00 every day. Beach trains to Cascais fill at weekends.
What to wear
Light clothes, a hat, sunscreen and a refillable water bottle. Pack a thin layer for Sintra's morning fog and the Atlantic wind, and cover shoulders and knees at Fátima.
Skip
Évora in July and August afternoons, when the streets have little shade. Sintra after 10:00 means long queues for the bus and the palace.

Works bestCascaisSetúbal and ArrábidaNazaréMafra

Autumn

Sep-Nov
Weather
September still reaches 27 °C, October 23 °C and November 18 °C. Rain returns in October, with 9-10 wet days a month by November, and sunset moves to about 17:20.
Crowds
Busy September is nearly as busy as summer at Sintra. Fátima is full on 12 and 13 October. From November the queues shrink everywhere.
What to wear
Short sleeves still work in September. From October add a jumper and a rain jacket, and wear shoes that grip, because polished limestone paving is slippery when wet.
Skip
Arrábida's beaches by public transport after mid-September, when the seasonal buses stop. Nazaré's big waves are possible but far from guaranteed.

Works bestÉvoraSintraPortoÓbidos

Winter

Dec-Feb
Weather
Highs of 15-16 °C and lows around 9 °C, with rain on 8-10 days a month. December has about 9.5 hours of daylight, and it is dark soon after 17:15.
Crowds
Quiet Queues are short at Pena and in Évora. The exceptions are Óbidos during its December Christmas event and Nazaré on big swell days.
What to wear
A warm jacket, a jumper and a waterproof layer with a hood. Palaces, convents and churches are unheated, so you keep the jacket on inside all day.
Skip
Cascais and Arrábida for the beach: the water is cold and the Arrábida beach buses do not run. Sintra in heavy fog shows little.

How much a day trip from Lisbon costs

The suburban trips cost very little: a return to Sintra or Cascais is € 5.10, and the Navegante card that holds it is € 0.50. Money goes on entry tickets, with Pena at € 20, and on distance. Évora is € 25.50 return by Intercidades, and Porto costs the most, so buy those seats in advance. For Óbidos, Fátima and Nazaré together, the tour from € 39 costs less than the separate coaches. Cascais, Óbidos and Fátima have no entry ticket at all.

On your own return transport and main ticket, per adultOrganized tour lowest listed price, per adult
Cascais€ 5.10€ 79
Setúbal and Arrábida€ 11.40€ 85
Óbidos€ 18.90–
Mafra€ 21.20–
Évora€ 32.50€ 85
Sintra€ 25.10–34€ 89.10
Tomar€ 37–37.60€ 110
Porto€ 64.50–74.50€ 109.99

What to eat along the way

In Sintra, try the two local pastries: travesseiros, filled with almond and egg cream, and queijadas. Óbidos sells ginja, a sour cherry liqueur, in a chocolate cup. Évora is the place for a sit-down lunch of black pork, migas or açorda with Alentejo wine. Setúbal is known for fried cuttlefish and Azeitão for sheep's cheese. Nazaré grills fish and dries it on racks by the beach. At Fátima and on Arrábida's beaches a packed lunch is the better idea.

Before you go

  • Each trip leaves from a different station: Rossio for Sintra, Cais do Sodré for Cascais, Oriente or Sete Rios for Évora, Campo Grande for Óbidos and Mafra.
  • A Navegante card holds one kind of ticket at a time. Load the Sintra or Cascais return at the machine and validate at the gate before boarding.
  • CP train strikes happen several times a year and are announced in advance. Check cp.pt the evening before, especially for Évora, Tomar and Porto.
  • Mafra Palace shuts every Tuesday and many town museums shut on Mondays. Pena, the Chapel of Bones and the Fátima shrine open every day of the week.
  • Know your last train. From Évora it leaves at 19:14 and there is nothing after it. Intercidades seats are reserved, so a missed train means a new ticket.
