Our verdict
Évora first; Tomar for one great monument.
Both are full days by direct train. Évora is 103 minutes from Oriente and costs € 32.50 with the Chapel of Bones; Tomar is 121 minutes from Santa Apolónia and € 37.60 with the Convent of Christ. Évora gives you more variety in 5 to 7 hours: a Roman temple, a cathedral and the bone chapel. Pick Tomar if one large monument appeals more than several small ones, or if you travel at a weekend, when Évora has only three trains each way and Tomar keeps its daily 07:45 out and returns at 16:00, 17:11 and 18:11.
