Day trips from Florence

The best day trips from Florence are Siena, Bologna and Lucca, all reachable by direct train or bus in 38 to 80 minutes, while Cinque Terre is the hardest at 2.5 hours each way. Pisa and San Gimignano deserve half a day, and Chianti only works with a tour or a car.

One, two or three free days in Florence

Three ways to use your free days, from the single trip we would pick to a full set.

1 free day

One day: Siena, start to finish

With one free day, go to Siena. It fills 6 hours without rushing and no other trip here gives you as much for a single ticket. Take the 08:10 direct train, start at the cathedral at 10:00, eat near the Campo and walk the contrade after lunch. One warning: go on a weekday, because on Sundays the cathedral only opens at 13:30.

2 free days

Two days: Siena, then Lucca with Pisa

Day one is Siena on a weekday, as above. Day two heads west: take the 09:09 direct train to Lucca, walk the walls, have lunch, then ride about 30 minutes to Pisa for a late tower slot when the lawn has calmed down, and return on one of the frequent trains to Santa Maria Novella. Buy the tower time before anything else, because nobody is let in late and the best slots sell out first.

  2. Lucca1 h 20 · Worth a full day
3 free days

Three days: hill city, food city, vineyards

Keep Siena for the first weekday. Give the second day to Bologna: 38 minutes by Frecciarossa, a long lunch in the Quadrilatero and a late train back. Book that train a few days ahead or it costs up to € 35 each way. On the third day take the half-day Chianti tour, which runs about 5 hours and leaves you the afternoon or the morning in Florence. Do not try Chianti by bus on a Sunday, when only six buses come back from Greve.

When to go: day trips from Florence by season

What the weather does, how full it gets and which trips work best in each season.

Spring

Mar-May
Weather
Highs rise from 16°C in March to 24°C in May, with mornings near 5°C early on. Count on 7 to 9 wet days a month and light until about 20:30 by late May.
Crowds
Very busy Easter week, 25 April and 1 May fill trains to Pisa, Siena and the coast. Squares are busiest between 10:30 and 15:30.
What to wear
Layers you can peel off by noon, a light rain jacket and closed shoes with grip for wet stone. April showers are short, so a folding umbrella is enough.
Skip
Cinque Terre before 14 March, when the Express timetable has not started, and Venice on fee days if you have not registered.

Summer

Jun-Aug
Weather
Highs of 29°C in June and 32°C in July and August, nights around 18°C and only 3 to 5 wet days a month. It stays light until about 21:00.
Crowds
Very busy Cinque Terre platforms, the Pisa lawn and San Gimignano's main street are packed from 10:30 to 16:00. Bologna empties in mid August.
What to wear
Light, loose clothes, a hat and sunscreen, plus a refillable bottle. Keep a scarf or thin shirt in the bag: cathedrals want shoulders and knees covered.
Skip
Val d'Orcia and Chianti at midday in July and August, when fields are bare and tastings feel heavy. Many Bologna trattorie shut around 10-25 August.

Autumn

Sep-Nov
Weather
September still reaches 27°C, October 21°C and November 16°C. Rain builds from 6 wet days to 10, the wettest stretch of the year, and by late November it is dark before 17:00.
Crowds
Busy September and early October stay busy, above all at weekends. Lucca is overrun during the comics festival around 1 November.
What to wear
A waterproof jacket and shoes that can take a soaking, with a warm layer for evenings from mid October. Sunglasses still earn their place in September.
Skip
Cinque Terre after 1 November, when the Express timetable ends and boats stop. Skip Lucca on the comics festival days.

Works bestChiantiSienaVal d'OrciaSan Gimignano

Winter

Dec-Feb
Weather
Highs of 11-13°C and lows near 2°C, with frost on clear mornings and 7 to 10 wet days a month. In December the sun sets around 16:40.
Crowds
Quiet Quiet everywhere except 8 December, Christmas week and Epiphany. Arezzo's Christmas market and Venice at Carnival are the exceptions.
What to wear
A warm coat, scarf and gloves for hill towns, where the wind cuts through the squares. Waterproof shoes matter more than an umbrella in narrow streets.
Skip
Cinque Terre as a day trip: no boats, short days and many kitchens closed. San Gimignano museums only open 11:00-17:30.

How much a day trip from Florence costs

Regional trains keep most trips cheap because fares are fixed: € 8.90 to Lucca, € 9.80 to Pisa and € 10.80 to Siena each way, on the day or a month ahead. Bologna is the exception. A late Frecciarossa costs up to € 35 each way against € 10 for the slow regional, so book early. Lucca's walls and the Pisa lawn are free. For several towns in one day the tour wins: from € 58.50 for Pisa, Siena and San Gimignano with lunch.

What to eat along the way

Eat by destination. In Siena order pici and take home panforte or ricciarelli. Lucca means tordelli with meat sauce and farro soup. Bologna is the big lunch of the list: tagliatelle al ragù, tortellini in brodo, mortadella from the Quadrilatero stalls. On the Ligurian coast go for trofie with pesto, focaccia and fried anchovies. San Gimignano pours Vernaccia, Chianti its own red with finocchiona. For Cinque Terre and Val d'Orcia days, pack breakfast and water: starts are early and stops are short.

Before you go

  • Trains leave from Santa Maria Novella. Siena buses use the Autostazione in Via Santa Caterina da Siena, Chianti buses and tours the Montelungo hub behind the station.
  • Paper regional tickets must be stamped in the green machines before boarding. Digital ones bought in the Trenitalia app need the check-in tapped before departure.
  • Rail strikes are announced days ahead and usually fall on Fridays. On weekdays regional trains are guaranteed from 06:00 to 09:00 and from 18:00 to 21:00.
  • Sundays cut your options: six express buses to Siena, six buses back from Greve, and Siena cathedral opens at 13:30. Arezzo's fresco chapel is closed every Wednesday.
  • Know your last ride home before you sit down to dinner: 22:30 from Pisa, 22:31 from Lucca, 21:40 from Siena and the 22:05 regional from Bologna.
