Day trips from Rome

The best day trips from Rome are Ostia Antica, 26 minutes away by local train, Florence, about 1 h 35 by direct high-speed train, and Pompeii, just over 2 hours with a change in Naples. The Amalfi Coast is the hard one: nearly 3 hours each way, and better with a night there.

One, two or three free days in Rome

Three ways to use your free days, from the single trip we would pick to a full set.

1 free day

One free day: Florence by train

With a single day, take the direct train to Florence. It needs no connection, the station is a short walk from the Duomo and trains run back until after 20:00. Book a morning Uffizi slot first, then buy the train to match. Cross the river after lunch. One warning: never plan this for a Monday, when the Uffizi is closed.

2 free days

Two days: Pompeii and the Tivoli villas

Do Pompeii first, while you still have the energy for a 06:55 start and five hours on your feet. Keep the second day short and close to Rome: Tivoli is 50 minutes from Tiburtina, and the fountains of Villa d'Este are the opposite of a dusty ruin. Leave a normal Rome day between the two if you can. Check the weekday before booking, because Villa d'Este only opens at 14:00 on Mondays.

Three days: art, ruins and Naples

Put Florence on day one and Naples on day three, with Ostia Antica as a half day in between so you are not on a high-speed train three mornings in a row. Ostia gives you the Roman streets, and the Naples museum holds the best objects from Pompeii, so you can skip the long Pompeii journey. Buy both sets of train tickets as soon as your dates are fixed. Watch the closures: Uffizi on Monday, Ostia on Monday, the Naples museum on Tuesday.

Summer

Jun-Aug
Weather
Highs of 28°C in June and 31-32°C in July and August, nights near 19°C, only 2 or 3 wet days a month. The sun sets after 20:30.
Crowds
Very busy Ferries to Capri and Amalfi and the Florence museums are packed all day. Ruins empty out after 16:00 because of the heat.
What to wear
Hat, sunscreen and a refillable bottle. Light clothes that still cover shoulders and knees for churches, sandals with a strap and swimwear for the coast.
Skip
Midday at Pompeii, Ostia Antica and Hadrian's Villa has almost no shade. Around 15 August many family restaurants shut.

Skip

Winter

Dec-Feb
Weather
Highs of 12-13°C and lows of 3-5°C, with 7 to 9 wet days a month. Daylight ends around 16:45 in December, so outdoor sites need a morning start.
Crowds
Quiet Quiet from mid-January to February. The exception is 8 December to 6 January, when Naples and Assisi fill up.
What to wear
A warm coat, scarf and waterproof shoes. Hill towns such as Orvieto and Assisi run a few degrees colder than Rome and catch the wind.
Skip
Capri and the Amalfi Coast: boats thin out or stop, and most restaurants and shops are shut until March.

How much a day trip from Rome costs

The train is what moves the price. A Frecciarossa to Florence costs € 23.90-44.90 each way and Naples € 22.90-58, so book as soon as you know the date. Regional trains have one fixed price: Tivoli is € 3 each way and Ostia Antica is a € 1.50 city ticket. State sites are free on the first Sunday of the month, at the cost of heavy queues. The tour is the cheaper option mainly for the Amalfi Coast by coach, from € 115.

What to eat along the way

Eat pizza in Naples, where a margherita in the old town is the reason many people go, and follow it with a sfogliatella. In Florence look for schiacciata sandwiches and lampredotto stalls around the markets. Orvieto means umbrichelli pasta and a glass of Orvieto Classico, Assisi means torta al testo and truffle. Around Castel Gandolfo order porchetta with Castelli wine. Take a packed lunch to Pompeii and Ostia Antica: food inside is limited, and leaving the site costs you time.

Before you go

  • Check which station your train uses. High-speed trains leave Termini, Tivoli trains leave Tiburtina and the Ostia line starts at Porta San Paolo, beside Piramide.
  • Regional paper tickets must be stamped in the green machines before boarding. Tickets bought in the Trenitalia app need check-in on your phone before departure.
  • Rail strikes in Italy are announced days ahead and often fall on Fridays. Guaranteed services still run 06:00-09:00 and 18:00-21:00, so plan around those windows.
  • Mondays close the Uffizi and Ostia Antica, and Tuesdays close the Naples Archaeological Museum. Set the weekday before you buy any train ticket.
  • Buy the timed entry first and the train second. Pompeii and the Uffizi sell named or timed tickets that run out sooner than seats do.
