Our verdict
Orvieto, unless you came for Saint Francis.
Pick Orvieto for a short outing: 82 minutes by Intercity, 3 to 4 hours on site and € 28.20 to € 35.80 with the Duomo ticket. Assisi costs about the same, € 31.50 with the bus and a free Basilica, but the journey is 170 minutes each way and only works well on the 06:45 train. Choose Assisi if Saint Francis and the Basilica's frescoes are the reason, and give it the whole day. If you want both, the three-town tour costs € 159 and gives you a short stop in each.
