One, two or three free days in Edinburgh

Three ways to use your free days, from the single trip we would pick to a full set.

1 free day

One day: Stirling Castle by train

With a single free day, take the train to Stirling. It is 41 minutes from Waverley, the return costs £ 12.60 on any train, and you are back by mid-afternoon with the evening free. Do the palace rooms first, then the Great Hall and the wall walk. One warning: if Edinburgh Castle already felt like enough castle, swap this day for Glasgow.

Two days: a town and a city

Give the better forecast to St Andrews, because the cathedral ruins, the Old Course and West Sands are all outdoors. Leave Waverley around 08:30 and change to bus 99 at Leuchars. Keep Glasgow for the other day: Kelvingrove is free and under a roof, and the last trains back run until after 23:00, so you can stay for dinner. Remember that Kelvingrove opens at 11:00 on Fridays and Sundays, and plan the morning around that.

Three days: Highlands, coast and castle

Start with the Loch Ness and Glencoe tour while you are fresh, since it means 12.5 hours on a coach and an early check-in at Castle Terrace. Make the second day a slow one: North Berwick is about half an hour by train, with a beach, a harbour and a short hill to climb. Finish with Stirling Castle on the third morning and be back for a late lunch. Do not put the coach day last if you fly out the next morning. You will be tired.

When to go: day trips from Edinburgh by season

What the weather does, how full it gets and which trips work best in each season.

Spring

Mar-May
Weather
Highs climb from 10°C in March to 15°C in May, with lows of 3-7°C. April is the driest month, about 9 wet days. By May it is light until after 21:00.
Crowds
Busy The Easter fortnight fills the Highland coaches and Stirling Castle. Outside it, weekdays in March and April are calm everywhere.
What to wear
A waterproof jacket over a fleece or jumper, and closed shoes that can take wet grass. Add a hat and gloves for the coast in March.
Skip
Alnwick Castle stays shut until late March, and the seabird boats from North Berwick only start in April.

Summer

Jun-Aug
Weather
Average highs of 17-19°C and lows of 10-12°C, so a warm day here is mild elsewhere. Expect 10-12 wet days a month. In late June it is light until about 22:00.
Crowds
Very busy August is the worst month: the Edinburgh festivals fill Waverley, the coach tours sell out and Skye runs out of beds.
What to wear
Light layers, a thin waterproof and sunscreen. Keep a jumper in the bag for boats, beaches and the coach's air conditioning. Midge repellent for the Highlands.
Skip
Deciding on a Highland coach the night before in August. Seats go days ahead, and midges bite at Glencoe on still, damp evenings.

Autumn

Sep-Nov
Weather
Highs fall from 17°C in September to 10°C in November, with lows from 10°C down to 4°C and 10-12 wet days a month. After the late October clock change it is dark by 17:00.
Crowds
Busy September stays busy on the Highland coaches. From mid-October the castles and trains are quiet, apart from the school half-term week.
What to wear
A proper waterproof with a hood, a warm mid-layer and shoes with grip for wet leaves and cobbles. Wind breaks umbrellas on castle ramparts and beaches.
Skip
Alnwick Castle after late October, when it closes for the winter. Castles run by Historic Environment Scotland shut an hour or more earlier from October.

Winter

Dec-Feb
Weather
Highs of 7-8°C and lows just under 2°C, with 10-12 wet days a month and frost inland. In December the sun sets before 16:00, so you get about seven hours of daylight.
Crowds
Quiet Empty almost everywhere. The exceptions are Glasgow's shops on December Saturdays and the Christmas and Hogmanay week around Edinburgh itself.
What to wear
A warm waterproof coat, hat, gloves and a scarf. Shoes with a good sole matter more than boots: castle cobbles and station ramps ice over.
Skip
Alnwick Castle is closed all winter. On the Loch Ness coach, several hours of the road pass in the dark.

How much a day trip from Edinburgh costs

Trains inside Scotland are the cheap part. ScotRail has no peak fares, so the Stirling return is £ 12.60 and the Glasgow return £ 16.80 on any train, bought on the day. Entry tickets are where the money goes: buy castle tickets online, £ 18.50 instead of £ 20.50 at Stirling. Glasgow's museums, the Kelpies and St Andrews cathedral grounds are free. For the Highlands the coach tour, from € 66, costs less than the trains and buses you would need alone.

What to eat along the way

On the Fife coast, eat fish and chips or crab near the harbour in St Andrews and Anstruther. North Berwick sells lobster and chips at the harbour from April to October. Glasgow is the place for a sit-down meal: curry, and Finnieston for seafood. In the Highlands try Cullen skink, a smoked haddock soup, at the lunch stop. Pack a lunch for Rosslyn, Falkirk and any coach day, where choice is thin and stops are short.

Before you go

  • All trains on this list leave from Edinburgh Waverley. The station has several entrances and ticket gates, so arrive 10 minutes early and check the platform board.
  • ScotRail fares do not change by time of day, so buy at the machine. Trains to Alnmouth are different: book those advance tickets days ahead.
  • Rail engineering works usually fall on Sundays, with replacement buses that double journey times. Check the ScotRail journey planner the evening before any Sunday trip.
  • Coach tours leave from Castle Terrace, a 10-minute walk from Princes Street. Check-in closes 5 minutes before departure and the coach does not wait.
  • Rosslyn Chapel opens at 12:00 on Sundays and Callendar House in Falkirk is closed on Tuesdays. Most castles shut on 25 and 26 December.
