Day trips from Amsterdam

The best day trips from Amsterdam are Haarlem, Zaanse Schans and Rotterdam, all under 45 minutes away by train, while Bruges is too far to enjoy in a single day. Keukenhof only counts between mid-March and mid-May, and Giethoorn works only on a coach tour.

One, two or three free days in Amsterdam

Three ways to use your free days, from the single trip we would pick to a full set.

1 free day

One free day: Haarlem

With a single day, take Haarlem. The train from Amsterdam Centraal takes about 15 minutes and costs € 5.50 each way, so you lose almost no time travelling. See the Grote Markt and the church first, then the Frans Hals Museum from 11:00, then the canals and almshouse courtyards on the way back. The one warning: the museum is shut on Mondays, so swap in Zaanse Schans that day.

Two days: windmills, then Rotterdam

Give the first morning to Zaanse Schans. Take a Sprinter before 8:45, walk the dyke before the coaches arrive and be back in Amsterdam for lunch. Keep the second day whole for Rotterdam, 41 minutes away on the Intercity Direct. The pairing works because the two places have nothing in common: wooden mills one day, post-war architecture and a working port the next. Tap the red supplement post before you board the fast train, or you risk a fine.

Three days: water, paintings, a tower

Day one goes to Volendam and Marken by bus 316 and the ferry; pick the driest forecast of the three for it. On day two take the 9:00 Intercity to Den Haag Centraal for the Mauritshuis, then a tram to the beach or a 15-minute train to Delft. Day three is Utrecht, 23 minutes away on the fastest train, for the Dom Tower and the canal wharves. Avoid Monday for The Hague, when the museum opens only at 13:00, and book the tower slot ahead.

When to go: day trips from Amsterdam by season

What the weather does, how full it gets and which trips work best in each season.

Spring

Mar-May
Weather
Highs rise from 10°C in March to 18°C in May, with lows of 3-9°C. April is the driest month, at about 9 wet days. After the late March clock change it stays light past 20:00.
Crowds
Very busy Keukenhof and Zaanse Schans are at their fullest from mid-April to early May, above all at Easter and around King's Day on 27 April.
What to wear
A windproof jacket over a jumper, with a scarf in March. Closed shoes for wet grass at Keukenhof and the dyke paths. Carry a light waterproof, because showers pass quickly.
Skip
Keukenhof on the flower parade weekend of 17-18 April 2027, and any train on King's Day, 27 April.

Summer

Jun-Aug
Weather
Average highs of 20-22°C and lows of 11-13°C, with 10-12 wet days a month. August rain often comes as short heavy showers. In June it is light until about 22:00.
Crowds
Very busy Zaanse Schans, Volendam and Giethoorn fill with coaches from 10:00 to 16:00. The Scheveningen trams are packed on any sunny weekend.
What to wear
Light clothes plus one extra layer, since the wind off the water keeps the coast and the ferry cool. Sunscreen for the shadeless dykes, and a compact rain jacket.
Skip
Keukenhof is closed. Giethoorn on a July or August weekend means queues of rental boats on the main canal.

Autumn

Sep-Nov
Weather
Highs drop from 19°C in September to 10°C in November, with lows of 11-5°C. October and November bring 12-13 wet days each. After the late October clock change it is dark by 17:00.
Crowds
Busy September weekdays are calm almost everywhere. The Dutch autumn school week in mid or late October fills the museums and Zaanse Schans.
What to wear
A proper waterproof jacket, not an umbrella, because the wind breaks them. Add a warm layer from October and wear shoes that cope with wet brick and cobbles.
Skip
Keukenhof is closed. Leiden on 2 and 3 October, when the city festival takes over. Marken and Giethoorn lose their point in steady November rain.

Winter

Dec-Feb
Weather
Highs of 6-7°C and lows around 1°C, with 11-14 wet days a month. December is the wettest month of the year. In late December daylight runs from about 8:45 to 16:30.
Crowds
Quiet Quiet everywhere except the Christmas market weekends in Haarlem and Bruges and the school break from late December to early January.
What to wear
A warm windproof coat, gloves, a hat and a scarf. It rarely freezes hard, but the damp wind on the dykes and bridges feels colder than the thermometer says.
Skip
Keukenhof is closed, Giethoorn's rental boats stop from November to March, and some Zaanse Schans mills shut or cut their hours.

How much a day trip from Amsterdam costs

Short trips are cheap, long ones are not. Haarlem costs € 5.50 each way by train and Utrecht starts at € 10, while Rotterdam is € 20.20 before the supplement. A € 13.50 MeerPlus day ticket covers the buses to Volendam, Marken and Zaanse Schans. Dutch domestic fares do not rise near the date, so only Bruges rewards early booking. For Giethoorn (from € 59) and Bruges (from € 49) the tour is cheaper. Buy Keukenhof online: € 21, not € 27 at the gate.

What to eat along the way

Eat fish at the harbour in Volendam: smoked eel, fried kibbeling and raw herring from the stalls. Zaanse Schans has cheese tastings and a pancake house, but lunch is better back in Amsterdam. In Rotterdam eat at the Markthal, and in The Hague try an Indonesian rice table or herring at Scheveningen harbour. Haarlem, Utrecht, Delft and Leiden all have market stalls for stroopwafels and cheese. Pack lunch for Keukenhof, Marken and Giethoorn, where choice is thin and queues are long.

Before you go

  • Tap in and out with the same contactless bank card or phone on every train, tram and bus. Forgetting to tap out charges you a deposit.
  • NS does track work on many weekends. Check the NS planner the evening before, because a 15-minute ride can turn into a replacement bus.
  • Buses 316 to Volendam and 800 to Zaanse Schans leave from the bus station on the IJ side of Amsterdam Centraal, upstairs, behind the platforms.
  • Monday is the weak day: the Frans Hals Museum, Museum De Lakenhal and several Utrecht museums are shut, and the Mauritshuis opens only at 13:00.
  • Trains between Amsterdam, Leiden, The Hague, Delft, Rotterdam and Utrecht run through the night, about once an hour, so dinner there is possible.
