Worth a full day
Our verdict

Is Utrecht worth a day trip from Amsterdam?

Go. Book the tower first.

Go, and book the Dom Tower before you leave. The fastest trains take 23 minutes, there are about 112 a day and a single starts at € 10, so the travel is no effort. The tower is the fixed point of the day: it opens only for guided tours, daily from 10:00 to 17:00, and the staircase tour costs € 13.50. You climb 465 steps to a platform at 95 metres. Bags are not allowed inside; lockers are free. The rest of the day is the Oudegracht canal, where the cafes sit on the lower quay at water level. Five hours is enough if you skip the museums.

What to see and do in Utrecht

  1. 01

    Dom Tower

The tallest church tower in the Netherlands at 112 metres. The guided climb of 465 steps ends on a platform at 95 metres and takes about an hour, with stops in the bell chamber.

  2. 02

    Oudegracht and the wharves

The main canal has a second street level down at the water, lined with medieval cellars that now hold cafes and workshops. Walking it from the Dom to the southern end takes 25 minutes.

  3. 03

    Dom Church and the Pandhof

The nave between church and tower collapsed in a storm in 1674 and was never rebuilt, which is why the tower stands alone. The church and its cloister garden are free. Allow 30 minutes.

  4. 04

    DOMunder

An underground visit beneath the Domplein, where you search 2,000 years of excavations with a torch, from the Roman fort wall onwards. It takes about an hour and runs at set times.

  5. 05

    Museum Speelklok

A collection of self-playing instruments, from musical clocks to street organs, shown in a former church. The instruments are played on the guided round. Allow an hour. Closed on Mondays.

How to spend the day

Take a direct train from Amsterdam Centraal around 9:30 and you are in Utrecht Centraal by 10:00. Walk through the Hoog Catharijne shopping centre to the Oudegracht and on to Domplein. Collect your ticket at the Tourist Information Centre at Domplein 9 and climb the tower late in the morning. Have lunch on the lower quay of the Oudegracht, then follow the canal south. A train around 16:30 has you back in Amsterdam by 17:00.

Utrecht in summer and in winter

Summer

June to August

The wharf terraces along the Oudegracht are the place to be, and canoes and small boats can be rented on the canal. It stays light until about 22:00, and trains to Amsterdam run all evening. With the university on holiday in July and August, the city is calmer than in spring. Tower slots sell out on fine weekends.

Winter

December to February

Utrecht works well in winter. The tower is open all year, the museums are close together and the Dom is a 10-15 minute walk from the station. Most wharf terraces close, so the canal is for walking. The top of the tower is bitterly cold in wind, and the climb can be cancelled in storms.

How crowded it gets

Busy
Busiest
Saturdays 12:00-17:00 on the shopping streets and the Oudegracht
Quietest
Weekday mornings; Sundays before noon

Utrecht is busy with locals and students more than with tour groups. Saturday afternoon is the crush. Book the first tower slot of the day, then follow the canal south past the Dom, where the shops stop and the street empties.

How do you get to Utrecht from Amsterdam?

Practical: clothes, food and money

What to wear

Shoes with grip for the tower: 465 stone steps, narrow and worn near the top. Skip skirts and loose bags for the climb. Bring a windproof layer for the upper gallery in any season.

What to eat

Lunch on a wharf terrace at water level is the local habit from April to October. The Vredenburg market, on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays near the station, has cheese, herring and stroopwafels. Student cafes around the Neude square serve cheap sandwiches and soup.

What you will spend

On your own€ 33.50

A train single starts at € 10 and the Dom Tower staircase tour is € 13.50, so this is one of the cheaper full days. DOMunder and the museums are extra. The canal, the church, the cloister garden and the old streets cost nothing.

How to get the most out of the day

  • Pick a tower slot before 12:00 on a clear morning. Haze builds through the day, and on a good one you can see Amsterdam.
  • The Rietveld Schröder House, a UNESCO-listed home of 1924, needs a timed booking days ahead and sits 2 km east of the centre.
  • The Centraal Museum, Museum Speelklok and Museum Catharijneconvent are all closed on Mondays. The tower and DOMunder stay open.
  • The carillon in the tower is played live on most Saturdays around 11:00. You hear it best from the Pandhof garden or the Domplein.

How long do you need in Utrecht?

Plan 5–7 h on site, plus 23 min of travel each way from Amsterdam.

When is Utrecht closed?

None (Dom Tower shut on Christmas Day, New Year's Day and King's Day). Best time: All year; clear days for the tower.
