One, two or three free days in Prague

Three ways to use your free days, from the single trip we would pick to a full set.

1 free day

One day: Kutná Hora by train

Take the 8:06 direct train from Praha hlavní nádraží and you are in Kutná Hora in 50 minutes. Start at the Sedlec Ossuary, a 10-15 minute walk from the station, then ride the local bus to the old centre for St Barbara's Cathedral and lunch. One warning: ossuary tickets are sold for a fixed date and time, so book the slot before you buy the train ticket.

Two days: Kutná Hora, then Dresden

Give the first day to Kutná Hora, the short one at 50 minutes each way. Use the second for Dresden, 2 h 07 min by direct train along the Elbe, where 5 to 7 hours covers the Zwinger, the Royal Palace and the Frauenkirche. Put Dresden on a Wednesday to Sunday, since the palace shuts on Tuesday and the Zwinger galleries on Monday. Carry your passport, and buy the Dresden train ticket ahead because fares rise close to departure.

3 free days

Three days: add a Karlštejn half day

Keep Kutná Hora and Dresden as the two full days and put a half day at Karlštejn between them as a rest. The S7 train takes about 40 minutes and runs every 30 minutes, so you can leave at 9:00 and be back in Prague by 14:15 with the afternoon free. Do not pick a Monday for Karlštejn, and from 1 November it opens Friday to Sunday only. If you would rather have a third full day, swap Karlštejn for Karlovy Vary and book the 7:00 bus from Florenc.

When to go: day trips from Prague by season

What the weather does, how full it gets and which trips work best in each season.

Spring

Mar-May
Weather
Highs climb from 9°C in March to 20°C in May, with March mornings near 1°C. Expect 6 to 9 wet days a month and daylight until about 20:45 by late May.
Crowds
Busy Easter week and the 1 and 8 May holidays fill Kutná Hora and Karlštejn. Midweek in March and April is calm almost everywhere.
What to wear
A warm layer under a windproof jacket in March, lighter layers by May, and shoes with grip for cobbles. Castle interiors are unheated, so keep the jumper on inside.
Skip
Bohemian Switzerland on your own in March, when bus 434 runs 3 times on weekdays. Konopiště stays shut until the season opens in spring.

Summer

Jun-Aug
Weather
Highs of 23°C in June and 25°C in July and August, nights around 13 to 14°C. These are the wettest months, with 8 or 9 rainy days, often as afternoon storms. Light lasts past 21:00.
Crowds
Very busy Český Krumlov's lanes and the Sedlec Ossuary are packed from 10:30 to 15:30. Karlovy Vary overflows during the film festival in early July.
What to wear
Light clothes, a hat and sunscreen, plus a thin rain jacket for the afternoon storm. Carry a jumper for castle tours and for the 5°C brewery cellars in Pilsen.
Skip
Karlovy Vary in film festival week unless you booked buses long ahead. Skip Vienna as a same-day return in a heatwave.

Autumn

Sep-Nov
Weather
September still reaches 20°C, October 14°C and November only 7°C. Rain falls on 6 or 7 days a month. By late November it is dark soon after 16:00 and mornings sit near 2°C.
Crowds
Busy September weekends stay busy, and Karlštejn is overrun on its wine harvest weekend in late September. November is quiet until the Christmas markets start.
What to wear
A waterproof jacket, a scarf and closed shoes that cope with wet leaves on the castle paths. From mid October add gloves for early trains and unheated interiors.
Skip
Castles from 1 November: Karlštejn opens Friday to Sunday only, Konopiště weekends only, and Tour Route I in Český Krumlov ends on 31 October.

Winter

Dec-Feb
Weather
Highs of 3 to 4°C and nights of -1 to -2°C, with snow possible at any time. Only 5 or 6 wet days a month, but daylight ends around 16:00 in December.
Crowds
Quiet Empty everywhere except the Christmas markets in Dresden and Vienna, which are crowded from late November to 24 December, worst on Advent weekends.
What to wear
A proper winter coat, hat, gloves and lined waterproof boots with tread for icy cobbles. Thermal layers help on platforms, where the wait is the coldest part of the day.
Skip
Konopiště, closed from December to March. Bohemian Switzerland, with the arch open Friday to Sunday only, icy trails and few buses.

How much a day trip from Prague costs

Day trips from Prague are cheap when a regional train or bus does the work. Kutná Hora costs CZK 552 with the return train and the ossuary ticket, the bus to Terezín is CZK 100 each way, and the Karlovy Vary colonnades cost nothing. The money goes on long-distance seats: buses to Český Krumlov and Karlovy Vary and trains to Dresden and Vienna have dynamic fares, so buy early. The tour earns its price at Terezín, at € 58 with transport and entry included.

What to eat along the way

Kutná Hora and Český Krumlov are the places to sit down for Czech cooking: svíčková with bread dumplings, goulash, roast pork with cabbage, and carp or trout in South Bohemia. In Pilsen drink the unfiltered lager where it is brewed. Karlovy Vary means warm spa wafers and a glass of Becherovka, Dresden means Eierschecke cake and Stollen in Advent. Pack lunch for Bohemian Switzerland and Terezín, where choices are thin, and for the Konopiště park.

Before you go

  • Four departure points serve these trips: Praha hlavní nádraží for trains, ÚAN Florenc and Na Knížecí for long-distance buses, and Letňany on metro C for Terezín.
  • The PID Lítačka app sells tickets for the S7 to Karlštejn and bus 413 to Terezín, so you can skip the ticket office queue.
  • Monday is the bad day for castles: Karlštejn, Konopiště and the Český Krumlov interiors are all shut. Use Mondays for Kutná Hora, Pilsen or Karlovy Vary.
  • Book both directions on the Český Krumlov and Karlovy Vary buses before you go. Summer afternoon departures sell out and there is no standing room.
  • Dresden and Vienna are across a border. Carry your passport or ID card, and remember both cities use the euro, not the Czech crown.
