What to see and do in Konopiště Castle
- 01
Castle tour routes
Four guided routes, each about an hour, cover the state rooms, the armoury, the hunting corridors and the private apartments of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. Most visitors choose one or two.
- 02
Hunting trophies
Franz Ferdinand recorded close to 300,000 animals shot in his lifetime. Thousands of antlers, heads and mounted birds cover the corridors, each labelled with date and place.
- 03
Este Armoury
One of the largest private collections of historic arms in Europe, with Renaissance tournament armour and decorated firearms inherited from the Este dukes of Modena.
- 04
Rose Garden and greenhouses
A formal terrace garden below the castle with Italian statues and a glasshouse, laid out for the archduke. It is a 10-minute walk from the gate and best in June.
- 05
Castle park and lake
A 225-hectare English park with free entry, forest paths and a lake below the walls. The loop around the water takes about an hour.
How to spend the day
Leave Praha hlavní nádraží around 8:45 and get off at Benešov u Prahy by about 9:40. Follow the yellow trail markers for 2.4 km and be at the ticket office around 10:20. Take one CZK 300 route before lunch, 50 to 65 minutes, then eat at the castle restaurant and walk the park. A second route fits before the 15:00 closing. Walk back to the station around 15:00 and you are in Prague before 17:00.
Konopiště Castle in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustThe castle opens Tuesday to Sunday with its longest hours and all four routes running. Weekends bring Czech families and a queue at the ticket office from 11:00. The park is shaded and good for a picnic, and the Rose Garden peaks in June. The forest walk from Benešov station is pleasant even in the heat.
Winter
December to FebruaryThe interiors are closed from December to March, so there is no castle visit. The park stays open and free, and an Advent event takes place on some December weekends. In November the castle opens on weekends only, 10:00 to 15:00, with fewer routes. As a winter day trip from Prague it is not worth the journey.
How crowded it gets
Quiet- Busiest
- May-Sep weekends and public holidays, 11:00-14:00
- Quietest
- Tuesday to Friday, especially in April and October
Foreign visitors are few. On a weekday you can usually join the next tour within 30 minutes. At weekends arrive for opening and buy tickets for two routes at once, since each has fixed start times.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
Walking shoes for the 2.5 km forest path from Benešov station and for the park. Castle rooms are unheated, so bring a layer in April and October. Carry a rain jacket, as shelter is scarce on the walk.
What to eat
A few restaurants and snack stands sit by the car park below the castle, serving Czech lunch plates, sausages and beer from the Ferdinand brewery in Benešov. The park suits a picnic. There is more choice near Benešov station.
What you will spend
You pay the train to Benešov u Prahy and one castle ticket per tour route, so two routes cost roughly double. The park, the lake walk and the outside of the castle are free. The Rose Garden and greenhouses may carry a small separate fee in season.
How to get the most out of the day
