Day trips from Athens

The best day trips from Athens are Delphi, Nafplio and one Saronic island, each a full day you can do without a car. Cape Sounion needs only an afternoon, and Meteora is the hard one: 4 hours each way, so sleep in Kalambaka or accept a 14-hour tour.

One, two or three free days in Athens

Three ways to use your free days, from the single trip we would pick to a full set.

1 free day

One day: Delphi by the 08:30 bus

With one free day, go to Delphi. One € 20 ticket covers a mountain sanctuary and a strong museum. Take the 08:30 KTEL from Liosion, climb to the stadium first, then see the museum and eat in the village before the 16:00 bus. The warning: only the 08:30 works, and return seats are limited, so buy the way back as soon as you arrive.

2 free days

Two days: Delphi, then an island

Do Delphi first, while you still have energy for 6 hours on a coach. Keep the second day slow: the 08:00 high-speed boat from Piraeus puts you on Hydra by 09:30, with time to walk the coast path, swim off the rocks and eat a long lunch. From November to April swap Hydra for Nafplio, which does not depend on the sea. The warning for Hydra: book both sailings ahead, because summer boats sell out and a missed return means a night on the island.

Three days: mountain, island and Peloponnese

Put a rest between the two long coach days. Start with Delphi on the 08:30 bus from Liosion. Spend day two on Hydra, by the 08:00 boat from Piraeus. On day three take the 08:00 KTEL from Kifissos to Nafplio, climb to Palamidi before lunch and come back on the 17:00. If ancient sites matter more to you than a harbour town, replace Nafplio with the Mycenae and Epidaurus coach. The warning: the three trips leave from three different terminals, so check each address the night before.

When to go: day trips from Athens by season

What the weather does, how full it gets and which trips work best in each season.

Spring

Mar-May
Weather
Highs climb from 16 °C in March to 24 °C in May, nights at 9-16 °C. Rain falls on 11 days in March, 6 in May. Daylight grows from 12 hours to over 14.
Crowds
Busy Delphi and Mycenae fill with school groups and tour coaches from 10:30 to 14:00. Orthodox Easter week is busy on every ferry and bus.
What to wear
A light jacket over a T-shirt and closed shoes with grip for worn marble. Delphi and Meteora sit in the mountains and run several degrees cooler than Athens.
Skip
The islands for swimming before mid-May, because the sea is still cold. Sites keep short winter hours until the end of March.

Summer

Jun-Aug
Weather
Highs of 29-32 °C on the coast, nights near 23 °C, rain on 2-4 days a month. Inland sites such as Mycenae and Olympia often pass 35 °C. Sunset is near 20:45 in June.
Crowds
Very busy Hydra's harbour and the ferries are packed at weekends. Coach groups reach Delphi, Mycenae and Meteora between 10:30 and 15:00 daily.
What to wear
Light clothes, a hat, sunscreen and at least 1.5 litres of water. Pack swimwear for the islands and something to cover shoulders and knees at the monasteries.
Skip
Mycenae, Olympia and Ancient Corinth at midday, when there is almost no shade. In a heatwave the ministry shuts outdoor sites for the afternoon.

Autumn

Sep-Nov
Weather
September still reaches 28 °C and October 23 °C, then November drops to 19 °C with rain on 11 days. The sea stays warm into October. Sunset moves from 19:45 to about 17:10.
Crowds
Busy September is close to summer levels on Hydra and at Delphi. From mid-October the coaches thin out and ferries sail half empty on weekdays.
What to wear
Summer clothes still work in September. From late October add a jumper and a rain jacket, and wear shoes that grip, because polished stone is slippery when wet.
Skip
Long trips from 1 November, when most sites close at 15:30. Ferry timetables to the islands shrink from October, so late returns disappear.

Works bestDelphiNafplioHydraAncient Olympia

Winter

Dec-Feb
Weather
Highs of 14-15 °C and lows near 7 °C, with rain on 11-14 days a month. December has about 9.5 hours of daylight and it is dark by 17:15. Delphi and Meteora can see snow.
Crowds
Quiet Queues vanish at every site. The exception is Arachova, the ski village beside Delphi, which is busy at weekends from late December to February.
What to wear
A warm jacket, a jumper and a waterproof layer. Add a hat and gloves for Delphi, Meteora or Sounion at dusk, where the wind makes it feel much colder.
Skip
Olympia and Meteora as day trips, because sites shut mid-afternoon and the road eats the daylight. The island cruise is a weak choice in rough seas.

How much a day trip from Athens costs

Entry tickets are the expensive part. Delphi, Sounion, Mycenae, Epidaurus and Palamidi each charge € 20, so two sites in a day add up fast. State sites are free on the first Sunday of the month from November to March, on 6 March, 18 April, 18 May, 28 October and the last weekend of September. EU citizens under 25 enter free with ID. The tour is cheaper for Delphi (from € 24 against € 30.20 by KTEL). Aegina is the low-cost island at € 12 each way.

Delphi€ 50.20€ 24
Saronic Islands€ 24–84€ 99
Hydra€ 70–84€ 99
Meteora–€ 84
Cape Sounion–€ 28

What to eat along the way

On Hydra and Aegina eat fish by the water: grilled octopus, fried small fish and sea bream sold by weight. Aegina grows pistachios, sold roasted or as spoon sweets at the port. Hydra's bakeries make amygdalota, soft almond sweets. At Delphi the village serves mountain food such as lamb, wild greens and formaela cheese from Arachova. Nafplio is known for ice cream and Nemea red wine. Pack lunch for Mycenae, Ancient Corinth and Sounion, where choice at the gate is thin.

Before you go

  • Athens has two long-distance bus terminals. Kifissos serves the Peloponnese and Liosion serves Delphi, and they are 15 minutes apart by taxi.
  • Bus 051 runs to Kifissos from near Omonia, and bus 024 runs to Liosion from Amalias Avenue. Allow 30 minutes for either.
  • Saronic ferries leave from gate E8 at Piraeus, a 5 minute walk from the metro station. Be at the gate 30 minutes before sailing.
  • Strong winds can stop all sailings for a day, and seamen's strikes often fall on 1 May. Check the port notice the evening before any island trip.
  • From 1 November to 31 March most state sites close at 15:30 with last entry around 15:10. Plan winter trips to arrive before midday.
