Day trip from Athens Ancient Olympia
The sanctuary of Zeus and the original Olympic stadium in the western Peloponnese, with two museums, about 3.5 hours from Athens by car.
Is Ancient Olympia worth a day trip from Athens?
Too far. Sleep in Olympia.
Not as a day trip. Hellenic Heritage puts the drive from Athens at about 3.5 hours each way. By bus you need roughly 5 hours from the Kifissos terminal to Pyrgos, then a local bus for the last 20 km. That is 10 hours or more on the road for a site that deserves 3 to 5. We found no coach tour from Athens on Civitatis either. Sleep in Olympia village and walk to the gate at 08:00. One € 20 ticket covers the sanctuary, the archaeological museum and the Museum of the Olympic Games. From November to March everything shuts at 15:30.

What to see and do in Ancient Olympia
- 01
The stadium
You enter through a vaulted tunnel onto a clay track 192 metres long, with the original stone start and finish lines. The grass banks held about 45,000 people.
- 02
Temple of Zeus
Home of the gold and ivory statue counted among the seven wonders. Earthquakes toppled it, and the column drums lie where they fell. One column was re-erected in 2004.
- 03
Temple of Hera
One of the oldest stone temples in Greece, from about 600 BC. The Olympic flame is lit with a mirror at the altar in front of it before every Games.
- 04
Workshop of Pheidias
The building where the sculptor made the statue of Zeus, later turned into a church. Tools and a cup bearing his name were found here and are in the museum.
- 05
Archaeological museum
Ten minutes on foot from the site. Allow an hour for the two pediments of the Temple of Zeus, the Hermes of Praxiteles and the Nike of Paionios.
How to spend the day
Day one: take a morning KTEL bus from Kifissos to Pyrgos, about 5 hours, and change there. Local buses to Olympia leave Pyrgos at 12:30, 16:00 and 19:30 on weekdays. Day two: be at the gate at 08:00 and see the stadium and the Temple of Zeus first, then the museum from 10:30. Take the 13:30 bus to Pyrgos for the 14:30 express to Athens, or the 16:00 for the 18:00.
Ancient Olympia in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustThe site keeps long hours, which is what makes a same-day visit from Athens possible at all. The western Peloponnese is hot and humid, often 35 °C, and the stadium has no shade, though the sanctuary itself is planted with trees. See the stadium first and keep the air-conditioned museum for the hottest hour.
Winter
December to FebruaryThe site closes in mid-afternoon from November to March, and the drive from Athens is 3.5 to 4 hours each way, so a day trip gives you very little time on the ground. It is also one of the rainiest corners of Greece. Stay a night or leave it for another season.
How crowded it gets
Busy- Busiest
- May-Oct, 09:30-13:00 on days when cruise ships dock at Katakolo
- Quietest
- After 15:00 in summer, and November to March
The crowds here come from cruise ships at Katakolo, 35 minutes away, and arrive in morning waves. A coach from Athens reaches Olympia around midday, when most of those groups are already leaving.
How do you get to Ancient Olympia from Athens?
Car
- Travel time
- About 3 h 30
- Departs from
- Central Athens
The only way to see Olympia and be back the same night, and it still means 7 hours of driving. Leave by 07:00, visit from 10:30 to 14:30 and you are in Athens around 18:00. In winter the site closes at 15:30, so a late start costs you the museum.

KTEL bus via Pyrgos
- Travel time
- About 5 hours + local bus
- Frequency
- 8 a day from Pyrgos to Athens on weekdays
- Departs from
- KTEL Kifissos terminal, Kifissou 100
KTEL Ilias runs Athens-Pyrgos, where you buy a second ticket for the local bus to Olympia. Weekday returns leave Olympia at 08:30, 09:30, 11:30, 13:30, 14:30, 16:00 and 17:00, and Pyrgos for Athens at 10:00, 12:30, 14:30, 16:00 and 18:00. We could not confirm the 2026 fare or the departure times from Athens.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
Comfortable closed shoes for gravel paths and a site that covers a wide area. Hat, sunscreen and water from May to September. From November to March carry a waterproof jacket, because rain is frequent here.
What to eat
The modern village is a 10 minute walk from the site and its main street is lined with tavernas aimed at visitors, serving grilled meat and oven dishes. The region of Ilia produces olive oil, honey and currants. On a tour, lunch is usually a fixed stop.
What you will spend
Distance is what you pay for: a guided coach or a rental car with fuel and motorway tolls. One combined ticket covers the site and the museums. Entry is free for EU citizens under 25 with ID. The village and the riverside walk cost nothing.
How to get the most out of the day
- The public route means a KTEL bus from Kifissos to Pyrgos and a local bus on to Olympia. It is too slow for a same-day return.
- Run the stadium track if you like. It is allowed, and it is the one thing here most visitors remember.
- The Museum of the History of the Olympic Games is on the same ticket and sits on the hill beside the village.
- Split the drive at the Corinth Canal, about an hour from Athens, where there is a service area beside the old bridge.
How long do you need in Ancient Olympia?
Plan 3–5 h on site, plus 3 h 30 of travel each way from Athens.
When is Ancient Olympia closed?
None. Best time: Apr-Jun, Sep-Oct; closes 15:30 Nov-Mar.
