Day trips from Barcelona

The best day trips from Barcelona are Montserrat, Girona and Tarragona, each a full day by train, while Andorra is the one to skip unless you stay the night. Sitges and the Dalí museum in Figueres are half-day trips, and the Costa Brava only works well on a tour.

One, two or three free days in Barcelona

Three ways to use your free days, from the single trip we would pick to a full set.

1 free day

One free day: go to Montserrat

With a single day, pick Montserrat, because nothing in Barcelona resembles it. Take an R5 train from Plaça Espanya before 09:00, ride the Sant Joan funicular and walk the ridge first, then visit the basilica and the throne after 12:00. Check the mountain forecast the evening before. If it shows cloud at the monastery, swap to Girona, which works in any weather.

2 free days

Two days: a mountain and a city

Put Montserrat on the clearer of your two days and Girona on the other. Girona is 40 minutes away on the 08:05 Avant from Sants, and its old town, cathedral and walls fill five to six hours on foot. The two trips leave from different stations: Plaça Espanya for Montserrat, Sants for Girona. Buy both Avant legs in advance, because the numbered seats sell out on Fridays and Sundays.

Three days: add the Roman coast

Keep Montserrat and Girona, then add Tarragona for the Roman amphitheatre by the sea. Do Girona first, as the easiest of the three, Montserrat on the clearest day and Tarragona on any day except Monday, when every monument is shut. Avoid Sunday there too, since hours end at 14:30. If you would trade ruins for a beach, replace Tarragona with half a day in Sitges, 37 minutes from Sants, and keep the afternoon free in Barcelona.

When to go: day trips from Barcelona by season

What the weather does, how full it gets and which trips work best in each season.

Spring

Mar-May
Weather
Highs climb from 16 °C in March to 22 °C in May, with mornings of 8 to 14 °C. April brings about six rainy days. Daylight grows from 12 to 14.5 hours.
Crowds
Busy Easter week and the May long weekends fill Montserrat and Girona. Girona's flower festival in mid May packs the old town for nine days.
What to wear
Layers: a T-shirt, a jumper and a light rain jacket. Add one more warm layer for Montserrat, which sits at 720 m and runs several degrees cooler than the city.
Skip
The sea is still cold, so the Costa Brava and Sitges are for walking, not swimming. PortAventura's water park has not opened yet.

Summer

Jun-Aug
Weather
Highs of 26 to 29 °C and nights that stay around 20 °C, with high humidity on the coast. July has about two rainy days. Late June gives you 15 hours of daylight.
Crowds
Very busy Beach trains to Sitges are packed on weekend mornings. Montserrat, the Dalí museum and PortAventura have their longest queues from mid July to late August.
What to wear
Light clothes, a hat, sunscreen and a refillable bottle. Carry something that covers shoulders and knees for the basilica and the cathedrals, and swimwear for any coast trip.
Skip
Midday on the exposed Roman sites of Tarragona and the Montserrat ridge paths. Go early or late and keep 13:00 to 16:00 for lunch.

Autumn

Sep-Nov
Weather
September still reaches 26 °C and the sea stays warm. October drops to 22 °C and November to 18 °C. Both are the wettest months, with about six rainy days each.
Crowds
Busy September is nearly as busy as summer. From mid October the crowds thin, except at PortAventura, where Halloween weekends are among its fullest days.
What to wear
Summer clothes still work in September. From October carry a jumper and a waterproof, because the rain comes in short, heavy bursts. Closed shoes for wet stone.
Skip
From late October the Costa Brava winds down, the Dalí museum closes at 18:00 and Sitges museums at 17:00. Skip Montserrat under low cloud.

Winter

Dec-Feb
Weather
Highs of 14 to 15 °C and lows near 6 °C on the coast, colder inland. Rain falls on three or four days a month. December has about 9 hours of daylight.
Crowds
Quiet This is the quiet season everywhere. The exceptions are the Christmas fortnight, the 6-8 December long weekend and Sitges during Carnival in February.
What to wear
A warm coat, a scarf and closed shoes. Montserrat and Andorra need a proper winter jacket, gloves and a hat. Girona and Figueres feel colder when the tramuntana wind blows.
Skip
The Costa Brava is half shut. PortAventura is closed from 7 January until late February. Tarragona's monuments close at 18:00, so start early there.

How much a day trip from Barcelona costs

Trains decide the cost. Rodalies and regional trains have fixed fares and need no booking: € 5.50 to Sitges, € 8.60 to Tarragona, € 8.95 to Girona on the slow Regional. The fast Avant costs € 17.40 to Girona and € 22.40 to Figueres, and the AVE on the same track costs about double, so always choose Avant. Montserrat is a flat € 50 with the Trans Montserrat ticket. For Girona and Figueres together, the coach tour from € 49 undercuts the two train fares.

What to eat along the way

At Montserrat, buy mató, a fresh cheese eaten with honey, from the farmers' stalls, and bring sandwiches for the ridge. Girona's pastry is the xuixo, fried and filled with custard. Tarragona means romesco sauce and fish in the Serrallo quarter, Sitges means xató salad in winter and rice by the sea. On the Costa Brava order suquet, the fishermen's stew. In the Penedès, drink cava with coca de Vilafranca. PortAventura bans outside food, so eat breakfast before you enter.

Before you go

  • Montserrat and Colònia Güell trains leave from the FGC station under Plaça Espanya. Girona, Figueres, Sitges, Tarragona and the Penedès leave from Barcelona Sants.
  • Avant seats to Girona and Figueres are numbered and sell out. Buy both legs together and reach Sants 20 minutes early for the luggage scan.
  • Check the Rodalies alerts page the evening before. Engineering works and strikes change timetables on the R2 Sud, R4 and Tarragona lines several times a year.
  • Monday closes the Sitges museums, every Tarragona monument and, outside July and August, the Dalí museum. Save Montserrat, Girona or Colònia Güell for that day.
  • Know your last train back: 19:35 from Figueres Vilafant and 19:52 from Girona on the Avant, 21:19 from Girona on the MD, 22:26 from Tarragona.
