Day trip from Barcelona Colònia Güell
A former textile workers' village in Santa Coloma de Cervelló with Gaudí's unfinished crypt, 20 to 25 minutes from Plaça Espanya by FGC train.
Is Colònia Güell worth a day trip from Barcelona?
Two to three hours. Worth it.
Half a day, and less if you move fast. FGC trains on lines S3, S4, S8 and S9 run from Plaça Espanya to Colònia Güell station in 20 to 25 minutes. The crypt costs € 10 with an audioguide, or € 15.80 as the Combinat Güell with the return train included. This is the building where Gaudí tried out the leaning columns and vaults he later used in the Sagrada Família, and you will share it with few people. The village around it takes another hour on foot. Mind the hours: 10:00 to 17:00 on weekdays, but only 10:00 to 15:00 on weekends and holidays.

What to see and do in Colònia Güell
- 01
Gaudí's crypt
The lower floor of a church Gaudí never finished, built from 1908 to 1914 and listed by UNESCO. Leaning basalt columns and brick arches hold the roof without buttresses. Allow 45 minutes with the audioguide.
- 02
The test bed for the Sagrada Família
Gaudí worked out the structure here with a hanging model of strings and weights. The exhibition in the visitor centre shows a copy, and explains what he later reused in Barcelona.
- 03
The workers' colony
Eusebi Güell moved his textile mill here in 1890 and built housing, a school and a theatre for the workers. The brick houses by Gaudí's assistants, such as Ca l'Espinal, line the streets.
- 04
Saturday farmers' market
Growers from the Baix Llobregat farmland sell fruit and vegetables in the colony from 09:00 to 14:00 on Saturdays. It is small, and it gives the visit some local life.

How to spend the day
Buy the Combinat Güell at the FGC machines in Plaça Espanya and take a train around 09:30. You are at Colònia Güell station before 10:00, when the crypt opens. Allow an hour inside with the audioguide, then an hour for the brick factory houses and the old mill streets. Take a train back around 12:30 and have lunch in Barcelona. On weekends, do not arrive after 13:30.
Colònia Güell in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustFrom June to August the crypt is cool inside, and you can see its stained-glass windows, which open like butterfly wings, in strong light. The streets of the colony have little shade, so walk them first, at 10:00. Hours do not lengthen in summer: weekdays until 17:00, weekends and holidays until 15:00.
Winter
December to FebruaryThe visit is the same from December to February, which makes this a safe choice for a grey day. Opening hours stay at 10:00 to 17:00 on weekdays and 10:00 to 15:00 at weekends. The site closes on 25 and 26 December and on 1 and 6 January. You will often have the crypt nearly to yourself.
How crowded it gets
Quiet- Busiest
- Saturday and Sunday mornings; the modernista festival weekend in spring
- Quietest
- Weekday afternoons all year
There are no queues to speak of. The only competition is school and coach groups on weekday mornings, which pass through in under an hour. If one is inside, see the exhibition first and return.
How do you get to Colònia Güell from Barcelona?
- Travel time
- 20-25 min
- Cost
- € 15.80 Combinat Güell, entry included
- Departs from
- Plaça Espanya (FGC station)
Take line S3, S4, S8 or S9 and get off at Colònia Güell. The Combinat Güell is sold at the FGC ticket machines in Plaça Espanya and covers both train legs plus the crypt with an audioguide. Over 65s pay € 10.90.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
Ordinary city shoes are enough, as everything is flat and within ten minutes' walk. The crypt is a working parish church, so dress as you would for any church. Carry water in summer.
What to eat
Options are thin: a few bars and one or two restaurants around the colony's square, some closed in the afternoon. Have a coffee here and plan lunch back in Barcelona, 25 minutes away, or bring a snack. On Saturdays, buy fruit at the market.
What you will spend
Costs are low. The FGC train is a short suburban fare, and the entry ticket with audioguide is modest. A two-hour guided tour costs a little more. Walking the streets of the colony and seeing the crypt from outside is free.
How to get the most out of the day
- Take FGC line S3, S4, S8 or S9 from Plaça Espanya to Colònia Güell station, about 20 to 25 minutes.
- From the platform, follow the blue footprints painted on the ground to the visitor centre, where you collect the ticket and audioguide.
- The crypt holds services, so access can pause for mass on Sunday mornings. Go on a weekday for an uninterrupted visit.
- The trains are the same FGC network as Montserrat. Both leave from Plaça Espanya, but the two do not fit in one day.
