Day trip from Barcelona Penedès
The cava country west of Barcelona, centred on Sant Sadurní d'Anoia, where the Freixenet cellars stand beside the station, 47 minutes from Sants on the R4.
Is Penedès worth a day trip from Barcelona?
Half a day. One cellar is enough.
Half a day, and one cellar is enough. R4 trains leave Sants every 30 minutes and reach Sant Sadurní d'Anoia in 47 minutes. Freixenet is next to the station and sells the Freixetren for € 20: the return train from Barcelona plus a 90-minute visit that ends with two glasses of cava. You must reserve the visit in advance. The town itself is small and built around the cellars, so do not expect a second half of the day there. The Civitatis tour costs € 123.50 and pairs a smaller cellar with Montserrat. Take it only if you want both in one day.

What to see and do in Penedès
- 01
Cava cellars of Sant Sadurní d'Anoia
The town makes most of Spain's cava and has dozens of producers. One of the big houses stands beside the station. A visit with tasting lasts 1.5 hours and must be booked.
- 02
Codorníu's modernista winery
About 1.5 km from Sant Sadurní station, in buildings Puig i Cadafalch designed from 1895. The visit includes a ride through part of the underground galleries. Allow two hours with the walk.
- 03
Vilafranca del Penedès
The wine region's main town, further down the R4 line. It has a medieval core, the Santa Maria basilica and a Saturday market that fills the centre. Two hours on foot.
- 04
Vinseum
The wine museum of Catalonia, in a medieval palace on Vilafranca's main square. It explains vine growing and wine making, and the visit usually ends with a glass. One hour. Closed on Mondays.
- 05
Family wineries among the vines
Small estates outside the towns offer vineyard walks and tastings for a few people at a time. Most are a taxi ride from the station, so a tour is the simple way to reach them.
How to spend the day
Reserve the Freixenet visit first, then build the train around it. For a 12:00 visit, take the 10:46 R4 from Sants and arrive at 11:33. The visit lasts 90 minutes, so you are out at about 13:30. Eat in Sant Sadurní and take a mid-afternoon train back. They run every 30 minutes, and you are in Barcelona before 17:00.
Penedès in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustFrom June to August the vineyards are green and the heat inland is stronger than on the coast. Book the first visit of the day, because the cellars stay at a steady cool temperature and the walk to them does not. Harvest starts in mid to late August. Vilafranca's festival, with its human towers, runs from 29 August to 2 September.
Winter
December to FebruaryFrom December to February the vines are bare and the towns are quiet, but the cellars work all year, since the caves keep the same temperature. Visits run less often, so reserve and check the language of the tour. Days are short: plan one winery and a lunch, not two wineries. Vilafranca holds a poultry fair before Christmas.
How crowded it gets
Quiet- Busiest
- Harvest weekends in September; Cavatast in early October; Vilafranca festival, 29 Aug-2 Sep
- Quietest
- Weekdays all year, especially Nov-Mar
The limit here is capacity, not crowds. English tours at the well-known cellars run a few times a day and fill up on Saturdays. Reserve several days ahead and build the train times around your slot.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
Closed shoes for cellar stairs and vineyard tracks. Carry a jumper even in July, because the underground galleries are cool. In summer add a hat and water for the walk from the station.
What to eat
Cava with coca de Vilafranca, a flat sugared bread, is the local pairing. Winter brings xató salad. Catànies, caramelised almonds in chocolate, come from Vilafranca and travel well. Eat in the centre of Vilafranca or Sant Sadurní. Many wineries offer food only by prior booking.
What you will spend
The train is a cheap Rodalies fare. The winery visit is the main cost and varies by cellar, with basic tours at the low end and tastings of aged cava or food pairings well above. A taxi to an estate outside town adds more than the train did.
How to get the most out of the day
- Most cellars close on Sunday afternoons and on public holidays. Saturday morning or a weekday is the safe choice.
- The R4 leaves from Sants and also stops at Plaça de Catalunya. Sant Sadurní is about 45 minutes away, Vilafranca about an hour.
- Check for engineering works on the R4 before you book a winery slot. Replacement buses on this line add time.
- Cavatast, the cava fair in Sant Sadurní, takes place on the first weekend of October. You taste many producers without booking visits.
