Day trip from Barcelona PortAventura World
Spain's largest theme park, next to Salou on the Costa Daurada, 1 hour 42 minutes from Barcelona by direct regional train or 1.5 hours by coach.
Is PortAventura World worth a day trip from Barcelona?
A full day. Take the coach.
Go only if rides are the point, and give it the whole day. The train is the weak part. Renfe lists three direct Regional Exprés trains a day to Salou-Port Aventura, at 08:15, 10:15 and 12:15, taking 1 hour 42 minutes for € 9.35. The only evening train back leaves at 21:41. A dated park ticket bought online starts at € 37, so you pay about € 56 on your own. The Civitatis coach costs € 69 with admission, leaves Estació del Nord at 09:00 and starts back at 18:30. For most people that timetable is the better deal. The season ends on 6 January 2027.

What to see and do in PortAventura World
- 01
Shambhala and Dragon Khan
Two coasters wound around each other in the China area. Shambhala climbs to 76 m and has no inversions. Dragon Khan has eight. Ride both in the first hour, before the queues build.
- 02
Furius Baco
A launched coaster in the Mediterrània area, near the entrance, that reaches 135 km/h in about three seconds. Most people run to it at opening, so it is calmer in the last hour.
- 03
Ferrari Land
A second park next door with its own ticket or a combined one. Red Force, at 112 m, is the tallest coaster in Europe. Two to three hours cover it.
- 04
SésamoAventura and the water rides
The area for small children, with gentle rides and no long walks between them. Older families head for the log flume and the rapids in the Far West area, which soak you.
- 05
Caribe Aquatic Park
The water park, on a separate ticket and open only in the warm months. It is a full day by itself, so do not combine it with the main park.

How to spend the day
By coach: be at Estació del Nord, platform 19, by 08:45. You reach the park at 10:30 and have until 18:30, back in Barcelona at 20:00. Start with Shambhala, Dragon Khan and Furius Baco before the queues build, and eat late. By train: take the 08:15, arrive at 09:57, and plan dinner in the park or in Salou, because the direct train back leaves at 21:41 and arrives at 23:24.
PortAventura World in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustFrom late June to August the park opens long hours, often until late evening, and the water park is running. Queues for the main coasters pass an hour by midday and the heat is hard on children. Ride the big coasters at opening, use shows and water rides from 13:00 to 16:00, and check the last train before staying for the night show.
Winter
December to FebruaryThe park closes after 6 January and the 2026 season began on 28 February, so most of January and February is out. In November and December it runs a Christmas season, mainly at weekends and holidays, with shorter hours and some water rides shut. Check the park calendar for your exact date before buying train tickets.
How crowded it gets
Very busy- Busiest
- Mid Jul-Aug daily; Halloween weekends, 19 Sep-15 Nov; Easter week; 6-8 December
- Quietest
- Weekdays in March, May, early June and late September
Arrive 30 minutes before opening and go straight to the far end of the park, China, while others stop at the first ride. Eat lunch at 12:00 or after 15:00. Single-rider queues save time on some coasters.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
Trainers, and clothes that dry fast, because the water rides soak you. In summer a hat, sunscreen and a refillable bottle. From October to December bring a warm jacket for the evening.
What to eat
The park does not allow outside food and bags may be checked, so you eat inside, at counters and themed restaurants in each area. Have a solid breakfast before you enter. Refill water at the fountains. Salou, by the station, has ordinary restaurants if you leave early.
What you will spend
The park ticket is the big cost, and it is cheaper bought online for a fixed date than at the gate. Ferrari Land, the water park and the express pass each cost extra. Food inside is at theme-park prices. The train is the small part of the bill.
How to get the most out of the day
- The station is called Port Aventura. From there it is a walk of about 1 km to the park entrance.
- Most big coasters require a height of 1.40 m. Measure children at home to avoid a wasted queue.
- Loose items cannot go on the big coasters. Carry as little as you can, or you will queue for lockers.
- Download the park app before you travel. It shows live queue times and which rides are closed for wind or maintenance.
