Is Tarragona worth a day trip from Barcelona?

Go, if Roman ruins interest you.

Go if Roman ruins interest you, and take the day. Regional Exprés trains leave Barcelona every 30 minutes, take 1 hour 27 minutes and cost € 8.60 each way. They stop at the city station below the old town. Skip the AVE and Avant: they take 32 minutes but stop at Camp de Tarragona, a separate station outside the city. Each monument costs € 5, or € 15 for the combined ticket to five sites, the walls, the circus and praetorium, the colonial forum, the amphitheatre and Casa Canals. Everything is closed on Mondays and Sunday hours end at 14:30, so avoid both.

What to see and do in Tarragona

  1. 01

    Amphitheatre

Built in the 2nd century AD beside the beach, it held about 14,000 people. The remains of a Visigothic and a Romanesque church stand in the arena. Allow 40 minutes.

  2. 02

    Circus and Praetorium

Vaulted tunnels that ran under the stands of the chariot track, linked to a Roman tower you can climb for a view over the old town and the sea. About an hour.

  3. 03

    Walls and Passeig Arqueològic

A garden path of roughly 1 km along the foot of the Roman walls, whose lowest blocks date from the 2nd century BC. It is quiet, shaded in places and takes 30 to 40 minutes.

  4. 04

    Cathedral quarter

The cathedral stands where the Roman temple did, at the top of the old town. It has its own ticket, separate from the Roman sites. The arcaded lanes around it are free.

  5. 05

    Balcó del Mediterrani

A railing at the end of the Rambla Nova, 40 m above the sea, looking over the amphitheatre, the port and the Miracle beach. Locals touch the iron for luck. Five minutes.

How to spend the day

Take the 08:15 Regional Exprés and arrive at 09:42. Start at the amphitheatre, then climb to the circus and praetorium, the cathedral quarter and the walls walk. Lunch in the old town or down in the fishing quarter. Monuments stay open until 20:45 from April to late October and until 18:00 in winter. Trains back leave at 26 and 56 past each hour. The last is at 22:26.

Tarragona in summer and in winter

Summer

June to August

From June to August the monuments stay open until 20:45, which lets you split the day: ruins from 09:45 to 13:00, a long lunch, then Miracle beach below the amphitheatre, and the walls after 18:00. The amphitheatre and the circus have almost no shade. Human towers are raised in the old town on several summer evenings.

Winter

December to February

From December to February the sites close at 18:00 and the low sun is kind to the stone. You will share the amphitheatre with a handful of people. This is calçot season in the countryside around Tarragona, and many city restaurants serve the grilled onions with romesco from January to March. Avoid Sundays, when hours end at 14:30.

How crowded it gets

Quiet
Busiest
Tarraco Viva festival in May, Santa Tecla around 23 September, Aug weekends
Quietest
Tue-Fri all year, especially Nov-Mar

Tarragona rarely feels crowded. School groups fill the amphitheatre on weekday mornings in spring, so reverse the route then: start at the walls and the Praetorium and come down to the amphitheatre after 12:30.

Practical: clothes, food and money

What to wear

Sturdy flat shoes for uneven Roman paving and a steady climb from the station to the old town. A hat and sunscreen from May to September. Bring swimwear if you want the beach.

What to eat

Romesco, the sauce of dried peppers, nuts and garlic, comes from here and goes with fish and grilled vegetables. For seafood and rice, try El Serrallo, the fishing quarter by the port. Plaça de la Font and Plaça del Fòrum, in the old town, make an easy lunch stop.

What you will spend

On your own€ 22.20–32.20
With the tour€ 98.50

The train is € 8.60 each way. Each monument costs € 5, so with three or more the € 15 combined ticket pays for itself. The walls from outside, the Balcó, the old town and the beach are free. The cathedral charges separately.

How to get the most out of the day

  • From the station, the stairway across the road climbs straight to the Balcó del Mediterrani. The road route is longer.
  • Buy the combined ticket at the first site you visit. It is valid at all five, so there is no need to queue again.
  • El Serrallo is a 20-minute walk west of the station along the port. Go there last and you are close to your train.
  • In even years, the human tower competition fills the city on the first weekend of October. Trains and restaurants are busy.

How long do you need in Tarragona?
