Day trip from Barcelona Andorra
A small Pyrenean country between Spain and France. Its capital, Andorra la Vella, is about 3 hours from Barcelona Sants by direct coach.
Is Andorra worth a day trip from Barcelona?
Sleep there. Or take the tour.
Do not do this as a day trip unless ticking off a country is the point. Direct Bus coaches from Sants station take about 3 hours each way, eight times a day, from € 31.50 one way. That is six hours on a coach for five or six in Andorra la Vella, a valley town of shops and a spa. The mountains are the reason to go, and they need a second day. If you insist on one day, the 12-hour coach tour via Mont-Louis and the Pessons viewpoint costs from € 87.20 and at least shows you some landscape. Carry your passport: Andorra is outside the EU.

What to see and do in Andorra
- 01
Casa de la Vall
A stone manor house from 1580 that served as Andorra's parliament until 2011. The old quarter around it, the Barri Antic, is a few lanes and a viewpoint over the valley. Allow 45 minutes.
- 02
Avinguda Meritxell
The main shopping street, about 1 km of perfume, electronics, tobacco and outdoor gear shops with low tax. It runs from Andorra la Vella into Escaldes-Engordany. Prices are not always lower than online.
- 03
Caldea
A thermal spa in a glass tower in Escaldes, fed by hot springs at around 70 °C. Entry is by timed session of about three hours. Book ahead.
- 04
Pessons viewpoint
A mountain stop on the tour route, above the Grau Roig ski area, with a view over the cirque and its lakes. You get there only with the tour or your own car.
How to spend the day
Take the 06:15 Direct Bus from Sants station and reach Andorra la Vella around 09:15. Walk the old quarter around Casa de la Vall, then Avinguda Meritxell for shops and lunch. The 15:15 bus has you back in Barcelona around 18:15, the 17:45 around 20:45. The last one leaves at 22:15. If you stay the night, use the second morning for the mountains.
Andorra in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustFrom June to September the valley is warm by day, cool at night and green. That is hiking season, yet a day trip leaves you in town, far from the trailheads. The 06:15 coach gives you the longest stay. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the Pyrenees in July and August, so carry a waterproof.
Winter
December to FebruaryFrom December to March Andorra is about skiing, which a day trip cannot fit in. Andorra la Vella stands at 1,023 m and daytime temperatures hover a little above freezing. Snow can slow the coach on the last stretch. Shops and Caldea work as normal, so a winter day here means shopping and a spa session, nothing more.
How crowded it gets
Busy- Busiest
- Dec-Mar weekends, long weekends, August
- Quietest
- Weekdays in May, June, October and November
The crowding that matters is on the road. Spanish and French shoppers queue at the border on Sunday afternoons and at the end of long weekends, which can add an hour. Travel midweek.

A coach loop through three countries: Mont-Louis in France, the Pessons viewpoint and a one-hour guided walk in Andorra la Vella, then free time on Avinguda Meritxell. Lunch is not included. Long, but it adds mountain scenery that the regular coach route skips.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
It is always colder than Barcelona: bring a fleece even in summer and a full winter coat, hat and gloves from November to April. Shoes with grip when there is snow or ice.
What to eat
Mountain food: trinxat, a fried cake of cabbage, potato and bacon, escudella stew in winter, and grilled meat. The traditional restaurants are called bordes, old stone barns, and most are outside the centre. On Avinguda Meritxell you will find quick lunches and chains.
What you will spend
The coach takes most of the budget, from € 31.50 to € 35 each way. Nothing in town charges entry apart from Caldea, which is the expensive option. The tour at € 87.20 leaves lunch out. Shopping is the risk to your wallet.
How to get the most out of the day
- Andorra is outside EU roaming. Switch off mobile data before the border or you may pay high per-megabyte rates.
- Customs officers check allowances for alcohol and tobacco on the way back into Spain. Keep receipts and stay within the limits.
- The currency is the euro, and shops open on Sundays, unlike most of Catalonia.
- Caldea sessions fill up on winter weekends. Reserve your time slot first, then buy coach seats that fit around it.
