Day trip from Barcelona Montserrat

A Benedictine monastery and pilgrimage basilica set high on a serrated mountain, about 1.5 hours from Barcelona by FGC train and rack railway.

Worth a full day
Our verdict

Is Montserrat worth a day trip from Barcelona?

Go. Give it most of the day.

Go, and give it most of the day. The R5 train from Plaça Espanya plus the rack railway takes about 1.5 hours each way, so a quick visit makes no sense. The Trans Montserrat ticket costs € 50 and covers the metro, train, rack railway, Sant Joan funicular and access to the basilica and the Black Madonna's throne. It gives no queue priority and leaves out the boys' choir. The throne is closed from 10:30 to 12:00, which is when most day trippers arrive. Go early or plan the throne for the afternoon. If cloud sits on the mountain, pick another day.

What to see and do in Montserrat

  1. 01

    Basilica and the Black Madonna

The 12th-century wooden statue sits on a throne above the altar. You file past it up a side staircase and touch the orb in her hand. Allow 45 minutes with the queue.

  2. 02

Sant Joan funicular and ridge paths

The funicular climbs 250 m in about six minutes. From the top station, signed paths lead along the ridge with views down to the monastery. A short loop takes one hour.

  3. 03

    Sant Jeroni summit

The highest point of the massif, at 1,236 m. From the upper Sant Joan station it is roughly an hour each way on a clear path, ending in a long flight of steps.

  4. 04

    Santa Cova path

A paved path to the cave chapel where the statue was found, according to legend. It passes sculpture groups by Gaudí and Puig i Cadafalch. About 1.5 hours return on foot.

  5. 05

    Museum of Montserrat

A small collection under the main square with paintings by Caravaggio, El Greco, Picasso and Dalí. It needs a separate ticket and about an hour. Good cover when cloud hides the views.

How to spend the day

Take an R5 train from Plaça Espanya before 09:00 and change to the rack railway at Monistrol de Montserrat. It runs every 20 minutes and takes 15. Ride the Sant Joan funicular and walk the ridge paths first, while the throne is closed. Eat, then enter the basilica and queue for the throne after 12:00. Start down by 16:30. The throne closes at 18:25, the basilica at 20:00.

Montserrat in summer and in winter

Summer

June to August

From June to August the day is long and hot, although the monastery at 720 m runs cooler than Barcelona. Walk the ridge before 11:00, because the paths have little shade. Queues for the rack railway and the throne are at their longest. The boys' choir takes its school holidays in summer, so check its calendar before counting on hearing it.

Winter

December to February

From December to February you find short queues and sharp, clear views on good days, sometimes with snow on the peaks. It is cold: expect about 5 °C less than in Barcelona, and wind. Fog can erase everything. The funiculars close for maintenance for some weeks in winter, so check the FGC notices. Start down by 16:00 to use the daylight.

How crowded it gets

Very busy
Busiest
Apr-Oct, weekends and holidays, 10:30-14:00; 27 April and 11 September
Quietest
Weekdays Nov-Mar; any day before 10:00 or after 16:00

Tour coaches arrive between 10:00 and 11:00 and leave by mid afternoon. Be on the mountain by 09:45, walk while the groups fill the square, and visit the basilica later. On Sundays local families add to the numbers.

A coach to the foot of the mountain, the rack railway up and a guide. The price is close to doing it alone, but the schedule is tight: the operator allows 15 minutes inside the basilica. Pick it if you do not want to handle the connections yourself.

Practical: clothes, food and money

What to wear

Trainers or walking shoes with grip, since the paths are rocky. Bring one layer more than you need in Barcelona, and a windproof jacket from October to April. Cover shoulders and knees inside the basilica.

What to eat

The stalls along the road to the monastery sell mató cheese, honey, dried figs and nut cakes, and will let you taste. The cafeteria and the self-service restaurant are functional and busy from 13:00 to 15:00. A sandwich on the ridge beats both.

What you will spend

On your own€ 50
With the tour€ 50.15

The € 50 Trans Montserrat ticket covers almost everything: metro, train, rack railway, the Sant Joan funicular and the basilica with the throne. The museum and the choir are extras. Food on the mountain costs more than in the city, so a packed lunch saves money.

How to get the most out of the day

  • The feast days of 27 April and 11 September bring thousands of local pilgrims. Pick another date unless you want the ceremony.
  • The R5 also stops at Aeri de Montserrat for the cable car. Your Trans Montserrat ticket is for the rack railway, so stay on until Monistrol.
  • Check the monastery webcams before leaving your hotel. Barcelona can be sunny while the mountain sits inside cloud.
  • Fill your bottle at the monastery before riding the funicular. There is no shop or fountain on the ridge paths.
