Day trip from Athens Nafplio
A harbour town in the Argolid with a Venetian fortress on the hill above it, 2 h 10 from Athens by direct KTEL bus.
Is Nafplio worth a day trip from Athens?
Go. Easy on your own.
Yes. Nafplio is the simplest Peloponnese day trip to do alone: KTEL Argolida runs 12 buses on weekdays and 10 at weekends, 2 h 10 each way, € 29 return. Leave on the 08:00 (07:30 at weekends) and you get six hours in town before the 17:00 back. The main sight is Palamidi fortress, € 20, open daily, reached by 999 steps or a 10 minute drive. The old town itself is free. The catch is at the Athens end: buses leave from the Kifissos terminal, west of the centre, so allow half an hour to get there. Skip the tour for Nafplio, it stops here for 1.5 hours.

What to see and do in Nafplio
- 01
Palamidi fortress
A Venetian fortress of 1714 with eight bastions, 216 metres above the town. The staircase is counted as 999 steps but has fewer. Allow 25 minutes up and 1.5 hours on top.
- 02
Arvanitia promenade
A paved path of about 1 km around the foot of the Akronafplia rock, from the harbour to Arvanitia beach. Flat, shaded in the afternoon, 20 minutes each way.
- 03
Syntagma Square
The marble-paved main square, with a Venetian arsenal that now holds the archaeological museum and a former mosque where the first Greek parliament met.
- 04
Bourtzi
The small island fortress in the middle of the bay, built in 1473. Boats cross from the quay in about 10 minutes when it is open. Otherwise see it from the seafront.
- 05
Arvanitia beach
A pebble cove under the fortress, 10 minutes on foot from the old town. The water is clear and deep close in. Bring water shoes.

How to spend the day
Take the 08:00 from Kifissos (07:30 at weekends) and arrive about 10:10. Go up to Palamidi first, by the 999 steps or by taxi, and allow 1.5 hours on top. Lunch in the old town around 13:00, then the seafront and Syntagma Square. Catch the 17:00 bus (16:30 on Saturday, 17:30 on Sunday) and you are in Athens soon after 19:00. The last bus leaves at 20:30.
Nafplio in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustClimb Palamidi straight off the 10:10 arrival, before the steps heat up, or take a taxi to the upper gate and walk down. Spend the hottest hours at Arvanitia beach or over lunch in the shaded lanes. Weekends bring Athenians, so the old town is loud and full on Saturday night. Evening buses run until 20:30.
Winter
December to FebruaryPalamidi closes at 15:30 from November to March, so go up first. The old town stays open all year because Athenians use it for weekends, and cafes on the square have heaters. Expect 12-15 °C and some rain. The beach is for looking at. A good winter trip.
How crowded it gets
Busy- Busiest
- Saturdays and Sundays all year, Greek public holidays, 12:30-14:30 when the tour coaches stop for lunch
- Quietest
- Tuesday to Thursday, and mornings before 11:00
Come midweek if you can. At weekends the seafront restaurants fill with visitors from Athens by 14:00, so eat at 12:30 or after 15:30. Palamidi is large enough that it never feels full.

The Argolid coach tour gives Nafplio about 1.5 hours at lunchtime, between Mycenae and Epidaurus. Enough for a meal and the seafront, not for Palamidi. Choose it only if the two ancient sites are your priority.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
Trainers for the Palamidi steps, which are uneven and have no handrail in places. A hat and water for the climb in summer, swimwear for Arvanitia, and a rain jacket from November to March.
What to eat
Lunch in the lanes behind Syntagma Square or on the harbour front, where fish and grilled octopus are the usual order. Nafplio is known across Greece for Italian-style ice cream. Wine lists lean on Agiorgitiko reds from Nemea, 40 minutes away, and oranges come from the plain around the town.
What you will spend
The KTEL return is € 29 and Palamidi is € 20, which makes € 49 for the day before food. The old town, the promenade, the beach and the view of Bourtzi are all free, so you can skip the fortress and halve the cost.
How to get the most out of the day
- The Nafplio bus station is on Syngrou Street, at the edge of the old town and 5 minutes from the foot of the Palamidi steps.
- The steps face east and are in full sun until midday. In July and August take the taxi up and walk down.
- The archaeological museum on Syntagma Square is closed on Tuesdays. Plan it for another day if that matters to you.
- At Kifissos, buy your ticket at the KTEL Argolida counter, not on the bus. Queues are longest on Friday afternoon.
How long do you need in Nafplio?
Plan 5–7 h on site, plus 2 h 10 of travel each way from Athens.
When is Nafplio closed?
None. Best time: Apr-Jun, Sep-Oct; Palamidi closes 15:30 Nov-Mar.
