Day trip from Athens Cape Sounion
A 5th-century BC temple of Poseidon on the southern tip of Attica, 2 hours from Athens by public bus or 65 minutes by car.
Is Cape Sounion worth a day trip from Athens?
Half a day, timed for sunset.
Worth an afternoon, not a day. The Temple of Poseidon takes under an hour to see and the € 20 ticket is steep for one ruined temple, so go for the sunset, which is why people come. The public KTEL bus from Aigyptou Square needs 2 hours each way. We could not confirm its 2026 fare or the last departure back, because the operator's site returned no timetable when we checked. The sightseeing coach from € 28 leaves mid-afternoon, waits for sunset and brings you back. That is the low-risk way. The site opens at 09:30 and closes at sunset, every day.

What to see and do in Cape Sounion
- 01
Temple of Poseidon
Fifteen of the original Doric columns still stand on a cliff 60 metres above the sea. A rope keeps you a few metres back. Allow 30 minutes to walk around it.
- 02
Sunset from the headland
The sun drops into the sea west of the temple. Stand on the slope east of the columns for the last 20 minutes to have both in one view.
- 03
Byron's graffiti
The poet carved his name on one of the square pillars at the temple entrance around 1810. You see it from behind the rope, so a zoom lens helps.
- 04
The coast road
The 68 km drive from Athens follows the shore past Glyfada, Vouliagmeni and Varkiza. Sit on the right side of the coach on the way down for the sea.
- 05
The cove below
A small sandy bay lies 10 minutes downhill from the site, with clear water and a view up to the temple. Only worth it if you come by car or the early bus.

How to spend the day
Keep the morning for Athens. In October the coach picks up at Omonia Square at 15:00, Stadiou 13 at 15:15 and Melina Mercouri at 15:30. You get about an hour at the temple before the sun goes down, so walk the headland first and stay by the columns for the last 20 minutes. The coach returns straight after sunset. Expect to be back in the centre around 20:00.
Cape Sounion in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustThe coach leaves Omonia at 16:30 and sunset is around 20:45, so you are back in Athens after 22:00. The headland has no shade and the afternoon is hot until about 19:00. The slope fills an hour before sunset. With a car, swim in the cove below first and go up at 19:30.
Winter
December to FebruarySunset comes shortly after 17:00 and the coach leaves Omonia at 14:00. The cape is windy and feels far colder than the city, and cloud on the horizon often hides the sun. On a clear, cold day the light is sharp and you share the temple with a few dozen people. Worth it then.
How crowded it gets
Busy- Busiest
- May-Sep, the 90 minutes before sunset, worst on Saturdays
- Quietest
- Mornings from 09:30 to noon, and winter weekdays
Nearly everyone comes for sunset, so the morning is close to empty. If the sunset matters to you, arrive an hour ahead, see the temple first and take your place on the slope while the coaches are still unloading.
How do you get to Cape Sounion from Athens?
Sunset coach
- Travel time
- 5 hours door to door
- Frequency
- Daily
- Cost
- From € 28
- Departs from
- Omonia Square, Stadiou 13 or Melina Mercouri
Pickup time moves with the sunset: 16:30 in summer, 16:00 in September, 15:00 in October, 14:00 from November to February (Omonia stop, the others follow 15 and 30 minutes later). The € 28 fare excludes the € 20 temple ticket. You can add it when booking.

KTEL bus
- Travel time
- 2 hours
- Departs from
- Aigyptou Square, Pedion tou Areos
KTEL Attikis runs the route from Aigyptou Square, next to Pedion tou Areos park. Ask at the kiosk for the last bus back before you board, because the site closes at sunset and you do not want to wait in the dark.

Car
- Travel time
- 65 min
- Departs from
- Central Athens
The site is at km 68 of the Athens-Sounion road and has its own car park. A rental makes sense only if you also want beach stops on the way down. For the temple alone the coach costs less than a day's hire.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
A windproof layer in every season: the cape catches wind from three sides and it cools fast once the sun is down. Wear flat shoes for the rocky path. In summer add a hat and swimwear.
What to eat
The cafe at the site entrance has a terrace facing the temple and is the only place on the headland. Fish tavernas line the bay below, a 10 minute walk downhill, and serve grilled fish and fried squid. The coach schedule leaves no time for a meal, so bring a snack.
What you will spend
Two costs only: the coach from € 28 and the € 20 temple ticket, which is not included in that fare. The view of the temple from the cafe terrace and from the cove is free, if you decide the ticket is too much for one ruin.
How to get the most out of the day
- Check the sunset time for your date before booking. The coach pickup moves with it, from 14:00 in winter to 16:30 in summer.
- On the public bus, ask whether it takes the coast road or the inland road. The coast route is slower and far better to look at.
- The ticket office stops selling about 20 minutes before closing. Do not arrive at the last moment.
- Bring a torch or a charged phone if you use the public bus. The stop is unlit and you wait after dark.
How long do you need in Cape Sounion?
Plan 1–2 h on site, plus 2 h of travel each way from Athens.
When is Cape Sounion closed?
None. Best time: Late afternoon, any season; site shuts at sunset.
