Day trip from Athens Meteora
Six working Orthodox monasteries built on sandstone pillars above Kalambaka in Thessaly, roughly 4 hours north of Athens by coach.
Is Meteora worth a day trip from Athens?
Sleep there. Or take the 14-hour tour.
Too far for a relaxed day. The coach needs about 4 hours each way, and the rail line into Kalambaka has been cut since the September 2023 storms: trains stop at Palaiofarsalos and a replacement bus covers the last 90 km. Stay a night in Kalambaka if you can. If you cannot, the tour is the only same-day option: 14 hours, from € 84, with about 4 hours among the monasteries and entry to 3 of them. Bring cash, each monastery charges € 5 at the door. Every monastery closes one day a week, and Great Meteoron is shut Tuesday to Thursday in winter.

What to see and do in Meteora
- 01
Great Meteoron
The largest and highest monastery, reached by about 300 steps cut into the rock. Allow an hour for the church frescoes, the old kitchen and the museum rooms.
- 02
Varlaam
Across a short bridge from Great Meteoron, with a 16th-century church and the old rope winch and net once used to haul monks up. Allow 45 minutes.
- 03
St Stephen
A nunnery reached by a level footbridge with no steps, which makes it the choice for anyone with limited mobility. Its terrace looks straight over Kalambaka.
- 04
Roussanou
A small nunnery covering the whole top of a lower pillar, reached by steps and a bridge. Twenty minutes inside is enough, and it photographs well from the road above.
- 05
Viewpoints on the ring road
The road linking the monasteries has signed lay-bys. The rock platform between Roussanou and Varlaam gives the widest view and is where people gather before sunset.
How to spend the day
The tour coach waits on Deligianni Street outside Athens central station. Be there 15 minutes early, it does not wait. Expect about 4 hours on the road, lunch in Kalambaka around midday, then 4 hours visiting 3 monasteries and the hermit caves. You are back in Athens roughly 14 hours after leaving. Staying over instead? See two monasteries in the afternoon, the rest next morning from 09:00.
Meteora in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustFrom April to October most monasteries open six days a week and until late afternoon, which is the only season when a same-day tour sees three without hurrying. Expect 32-35 °C on the plain, long stairs in full sun and a queue at Great Meteoron around midday. Covered clothing is still required at the door.
Winter
December to FebruaryHours shorten and more monasteries close on more days: Great Meteoron shuts Tuesday to Thursday. Fog can hide the rocks completely, and snow is possible from December to February. The 14-hour tour then spends much of its time in the dark. Go only if you can stay a night and pick your day.
How crowded it gets
Very busy- Busiest
- May-Sep, 10:00-14:00 at Great Meteoron and Varlaam
- Quietest
- The first hour after opening at 09:00, and November to March
Day coaches reach the rocks around midday, so the two largest monasteries are full from 11:00. If you sleep in Kalambaka, be at the door of Great Meteoron at 09:00 and leave the smaller ones for the afternoon.

Organized tour

- Daily
- Cost
- From € 84
- Departs from
- Athens central station (Larissa Station), Deligianni Street
Coach with wifi, audio guide or live guide depending on the option. Monastery entry is extra: € 5 each, cash, for 3 monasteries. Dress code is enforced: shoulders and knees covered, and women need a long skirt, trousers are not accepted.

Train + replacement bus
- Travel time
- About 5 hours each way
- Departs from
- Athens central station (Larissa Station)
Trains run only as far as Palaiofarsalos, where a bus continues to Kalambaka via Karditsa and Trikala. The direct line was announced to reopen in late 2026. Check Hellenic Train before you plan around it. Ten hours of travel leaves too little time for a day trip.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
Shoulders and knees covered for everyone. Women need a long skirt, and trousers are not accepted, though wrap skirts are lent at the entrances. Wear shoes for stairs and bring a jacket outside summer.
What to eat
Eat in Kalambaka or the smaller village of Kastraki below the rocks. Thessaly is meat country: grilled lamb chops, sausages from Trikala and meat stews, with local pies. Halva from Farsala is the regional sweet. Nothing is sold inside the monasteries, so carry water.
What you will spend
The tour from € 84 is the main cost and covers transport and a guide or audio guide. Add € 5 in cash at each of the three monasteries, plus lunch in Kalambaka. The viewpoints and the walk between monasteries cost nothing.
How to get the most out of the day
- Carry coins and small notes. The monasteries take cash only and rarely have change for large notes.
- Photography is forbidden inside the churches. Keep the camera for the terraces and courtyards.
- If stairs are a problem, tell the guide early. St Stephen has none, while Great Meteoron and Holy Trinity have the longest climbs.
- Check which monastery is closed on your day before booking. Each one shuts on a different weekday.
How long do you need in Meteora?
