Day trip from Prague Terezín
A fortress town north of Prague used as a ghetto and Gestapo prison in the Second World War, 50 minutes by bus from Letňany.
Is Terezín worth a day trip from Prague?
Go for the history. Half a day.
Worth it if the subject matters to you, and 3 to 5 hours on site is enough for the Small Fortress and the Ghetto Museum. Bus 413 leaves Praha Letňany every hour on the hour and takes 50 minutes for CZK 100 each way. Add 20-25 minutes of metro from the centre. The sites are spread across the town and the fortress, so expect a fair amount of walking between them. A guide helps here more than at most places, because little is explained on the walls. That is the argument for the tour, which costs € 58 with transport and entry included.

What to see and do in Terezín
- 01
Small Fortress
The Gestapo prison, with its gate, cell blocks, washrooms and execution ground. Plan 1.5 to 2 hours. The national cemetery lies in front of the entrance.
- 02
Ghetto Museum
A former school in the town centre that tells the story of the ghetto, with children's drawings made in secret classes. Allow 45 minutes and watch the short film.
- 03
Magdeburg Barracks
Seat of the Jewish self-administration, now with a rebuilt dormitory and rooms on the music, art and theatre made in the ghetto. A 5-minute walk from the museum.
- 04
Crematorium and Jewish cemetery
A 15-minute walk south of the centre, past the columbarium. It is closed on Saturdays, which is why the Saturday tour leaves it out.

How to spend the day
Take metro line C to Letňany and board the 9:00 bus 413. Get off at Terezín, U Památníku at about 9:50 and start with the Small Fortress, which takes around 2 hours. Walk into the town for the Ghetto Museum and a short lunch. Catch a bus back from the main square around 14:00. You are at Letňany by 15:00 and in the centre before 15:30.
Terezín in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustAll sites keep longer hours from April to October, with the Small Fortress open 8:00 to 18:00. The fortress yards and the 1 km road to the town are fully exposed to the sun, so carry water. School groups are thinner in July and August than in May and June. Heat is the main difficulty.
Winter
December to FebruaryOpen daily except 24-26 December and 1 January, with the Small Fortress closing at 16:30. Take the 9:00 bus so you finish the outdoor parts in daylight. Much of the visit is outside or in unheated cells, and the wind across the ramparts is sharp. Few visitors come, and the cold makes the visit harder.
How crowded it gets
Quiet- Busiest
- April to June weekdays, 10:00-13:00, when school groups visit
- Quietest
- Afternoons, weekends in winter, July and August
Crowding is rarely a problem. Groups cluster at the Small Fortress gate mid-morning. Start with the Ghetto Museum at 9:00 and reach the fortress after 11:30, when most groups have gone through.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
Comfortable shoes for 4 to 5 km of walking between sites on rough paving. Dress soberly, as you would for a cemetery. Men cover their heads at the Jewish cemetery. In winter wear your warmest layers.
What to eat
Terezín has only a handful of plain canteens and cafes around the main square, serving soup and Czech set lunches. Many visitors bring a sandwich and eat on the square. Litoměřice, 3 km north, has a proper choice if you extend the day.
What you will spend
Bus 413 costs CZK 100 each way. On site you pay one combined memorial ticket that covers the Small Fortress, the Ghetto Museum and the Magdeburg Barracks. The town, the cemeteries and the ramparts are free. The tour from Prague is € 58 with transport, guide and entry.
How to get the most out of the day
- Buy the combined ticket at the first site you enter and keep it. It is checked again at each of the other buildings.
- Ask at the Small Fortress ticket office for the next guided walk in English. Without one the cells are hard to read.
- This is a memorial and a burial place. Keep your voice down and think before taking photos of yourself.
- Check the time of the last bus 413 from the main square before you start. The hourly gap is long if you miss one.
