Day trip from Prague Kutná Hora
A former silver-mining town with the Sedlec Ossuary and St Barbara's Cathedral, 50 minutes from Prague main station by direct train.
Is Kutná Hora worth a day trip from Prague?
Go. The easiest full day out.
Go, and do it on your own. The direct train from Praha hlavní nádraží takes 50 minutes and leaves every 2 hours from 8:06, with hourly options that change at Kolín. Budget 4 to 6 hours in town: the Sedlec Ossuary is a 10-15 minute walk from the main station, the old centre and St Barbara's Cathedral are about 3 km further. The catch is the ossuary. Capacity is limited and tickets are sold for a fixed date and time, online or at the Sedlec information centre, so book before you travel. It is under reconstruction until at least 2030 but stays open.

What to see and do in Kutná Hora
- 01
Sedlec Ossuary
A small cemetery chapel decorated with the bones of some 40,000 people, including a chandelier and a coat of arms. The visit takes 20 to 30 minutes on a timed ticket.
- 02
Cathedral of the Assumption, Sedlec
The former monastery church stands 300 metres from the ossuary and is usually far emptier. Give it 20 minutes for the pale Baroque Gothic vaulting by Santini.
- 03
St Barbara's Cathedral
A late Gothic church paid for by the silver miners, with three tent-shaped roofs and frescoes of miners at work. Allow 45 minutes, including the gallery upstairs.
- 04
Jesuit College terrace
The walkway between St Barbara's and the old centre runs past 13 Baroque statues and looks over the vineyards and the Vrchlice valley. It is free and takes 10 minutes.
- 05
Hrádek silver museum and mine
The Czech Museum of Silver runs a guided route that ends in 250 metres of medieval mine tunnel, in helmet and white coat. Closed on Mondays, and the mine shuts in winter.
How to spend the day
Take the 8:06 direct train from Praha hlavní nádraží and you are in Kutná Hora at about 8:56. Walk 10-15 minutes to Sedlec and enter the ossuary on a 9:30 slot (it opens at 9:00). Take a local bus to the centre, about 15 minutes, for St Barbara's Cathedral and lunch. Head back to the main station around 15:00. Direct trains to Prague run every 2 hours, so check the departure before you leave the centre.
Kutná Hora in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustThe ossuary stays open until 18:00 from April to September, which makes a later train workable. Slots between 10:30 and 14:00 sell out days ahead, because that is when the tour coaches arrive. Do Sedlec at 9:00 or after 16:00 and spend midday in the old centre. The 3 km between the two halves of town has little shade.
Winter
December to FebruaryIt still works, and it is the quietest time to see the ossuary. Hours shrink to 9:00-16:00 from November to February, so take the 8:06 train and do Sedlec first. The silver mine route is closed and the museum shuts for part of the winter. Both churches are unheated. Plan a long indoor lunch in the centre.
How crowded it gets
Busy- Busiest
- May-Sep, 10:30-14:00, and all Saturdays
- Quietest
- November to March, and any day at 9:00
The crush is at the ossuary only, a small room that fills when two coaches arrive together. Book the first slot of the day. St Barbara's and the old centre absorb visitors without trouble, even in August.

Get off at Kutná Hora hlavní nádraží, not Kutná Hora město. The ossuary is a 10-15 minute walk. For the old centre, about 3 km away, take a local bus from the station, roughly 15 minutes and CZK 20. There is no discount for a return ticket.

A coach takes about 1.5 hours each way and the price includes entry to the ossuary and St Barbara's Cathedral. It is slower and dearer than the train. Pick it only if you want a guide and no ticket planning.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
Flat shoes for cobbles and the walk from the station. Shoulders covered in the churches is polite, and both are cold inside from October to April. The mine route needs closed shoes and a warm layer.
What to eat
Eat in the old centre between the Italian Court and St Barbara's, where pubs serve goulash, svíčková and roast pork with dumplings. Try the town's own beer and the white wine from the vineyards below the cathedral. Sedlec has little beyond snacks.
What you will spend
The fixed costs are the train at CZK 166 each way and the ossuary ticket at CZK 220, which is CZK 552 in total. St Barbara's Cathedral is a separate ticket and the local bus to the centre is roughly CZK 20. The town, the terrace walk and the views are free.
How to get the most out of the day
- Photography inside the ossuary has been banned since 2020. Leave the camera in the bag and you will avoid an argument with the staff.
- A combined ticket sold at the Sedlec information centre covers the ossuary, the Sedlec cathedral and St Barbara's, and costs less than three single entries.
- Going back, the small Kutná Hora město station is close to the centre. Local trains from there connect to Prague trains at the main station.
- Bring coins or a contactless card for the local bus between Sedlec and the centre. On foot the same stretch takes about 40 minutes.
How long do you need in Kutná Hora?
Plan 4–6 h on site, plus 50 min of travel each way from Prague.
