Day trip from Prague Bohemian Switzerland
A national park on the German border with the Pravčická brána rock arch and river gorges, reached via Děčín, 1 h 16 min from Prague by train.
Is Bohemian Switzerland worth a day trip from Prague?
Only with a tour, outside summer.
Take the tour unless it is July or August. On your own you need a train to Děčín, 1 h 16 min at best and 1 h 33 min on average, then bus 434 to Hřensko. That bus runs every 30 minutes in July and August but only 4 times a day in April, May, June, September and October, and 3 times on weekdays in March and November. Miss one and the day is gone. The Pravčická brána arch costs CZK 125 and opens daily 10:00 to 18:00 from late March to October, then Friday to Sunday only. Expect 5 to 7 hours of walking either way.

What to see and do in Bohemian Switzerland
- 01
Pravčická brána
The largest natural sandstone arch in Europe, with a span of 26.5 metres. The climb from the Hřensko bus stop takes about an hour. Entry to the viewpoints is CZK 125.
- 02
Kamenice gorges
Narrow canyons below Hřensko where boatmen pole flat boats down the river between rock walls. Boats run in the warm season only, and sections have opened and closed since the 2022 fire.
- 03
Hřensko
The lowest village in the country, squeezed into a side canyon where the Kamenice meets the Elbe. It is the start and end point for both main walks.
- 04
Bastei bridge, Saxon side
A stone bridge strung between rock towers 194 metres above the Elbe, across the German border. The tour includes it. Public transport from Hřensko cannot fit it into the same day.

How to spend the day
With the tour: 12 hours door to door from Prague, hiking boots on. On your own in summer: take a train from Praha hlavní nádraží around 7:00, reach Děčín by 8:30 and board bus 434 at stand 2 in front of the station. Walk up to Pravčická brána for the 10:00 opening, continue towards Mezní Louka, then down to the gorges. Be back in Hřensko by 17:00 for the bus to Děčín.
Bohemian Switzerland in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustThe only season when going on your own is realistic: bus 434 runs every 30 minutes in July and August and the arch opens daily from 10:00 to 18:00. Start early, because the climb is hot by noon and the path is busy. Boat queues in the gorges can pass an hour. Carry 1.5 litres of water each.
Winter
December to FebruaryFrom November to March the arch opens Friday to Sunday only, the gorge boats do not run and the buses thin to a few a day. Paths can be icy and shaded sections stay frozen. The forest is silent and the rocks look good under snow, but as a day trip from Prague it is not worth it without the tour.
How crowded it gets
Busy- Busiest
- Jul-Aug and May-Sep weekends, 10:30-15:00 on the arch path
- Quietest
- Weekdays in April, May and October
Everyone walks the same route to the arch. Be at the gate at 10:00, or go after 15:00 when day groups are descending. The gorge boats have limited daily tickets, so buy those first.
How do you get to Bohemian Switzerland from Prague?
Organized tour

- Central Prague
A small-group trip that covers both the Czech and the Saxon side of the park in one day, which public transport cannot do. It removes the bus timetable problem and the guide picks the trails according to closures. Check the current price on the booking page.

Train + bus
- Travel time
- 1 h 16 min to Děčín + bus 434
- Frequency
- 33 trains a day; bus 4 times a day in Sep-Oct
- Departs from
- Praha hlavní nádraží
Trains to Děčín hlavní nádraží are frequent, 21 of them direct. Bus 434 leaves from stand 2 in front of the station and stops at Hřensko, Pravčická brána. Photograph the return timetable at the stop. Entry to the arch is CZK 125.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
Hiking boots or trail shoes with a real tread: expect roots, sand and wet rock steps. Pack a rain shell and a fleece even in July, as the gorges are cool. No sandals.
What to eat
Bring lunch and water. There is a restaurant at the arch and several in Hřensko, mostly serving fried cheese, sausages and goulash, and they are slow when busy. Nothing is sold along the trails between them.
What you will spend
Entry to the Pravčická brána viewpoints is CZK 125 and the gorge boats are paid separately, often in cash. The trails and the national park are free. On your own you add the train to Děčín and bus 434. The tour covers transport and guiding in one price.
How to get the most out of the day
- The Gabriela trail from the arch towards Mezní Louka was still closed in 2026 after the 2022 fire. Check the park's closure map first.
- Carry Czech cash. The boatmen, small kiosks and some car parks around Hřensko do not take cards.
- Mobile signal drops in the gorges and often roams onto German networks. Download the map and the bus timetable for offline use.
- After heavy rain or in high fire risk the park closes trails at short notice. The national park website posts closures the same day.
When is Bohemian Switzerland closed?
Nov-Mar: Pravčická brána open Fri-Sun only. Best time: Apr-Oct, daily 10:00-18:00; July and August for frequent buses.
