Day trip from Prague Český Krumlov
A small UNESCO-listed town in South Bohemia built around a large castle, 2 h 35 min from Prague by the fastest direct bus.
Is Český Krumlov worth a day trip from Prague?
Sleep there. Or take the tour.
Not as a same-day return on your own, unless you accept more than 5 hours on a bus. The fastest direct bus takes 2 h 35 min each way and there are 8 FlixBus departures a day, so a day trip leaves you 5 to 6 hours in town at best. Staying one night fixes that and gives you the streets after the coaches leave. The castle is the other catch: interior tours run Tuesday to Sunday and Tour Route I stops on 31 October. If one day is all you have, the organized tour is the least tiring way, at 10 to 11 hours door to door.

What to see and do in Český Krumlov
- 01
Castle Tour Route I
A guided hour through the Renaissance and Baroque rooms, including the Masquerade Hall with its painted carnival figures. It costs CZK 300 and runs Tuesday to Sunday until 31 October.
- 02
Castle tower and museum
Climb 162 steps for the view over the river bend and the roofs. The joint ticket with the museum is CZK 280, and unlike the interiors it stays open into December.
- 03
Cloak Bridge and castle gardens
A three-storey covered bridge leads from the upper castle to terraced gardens with a fountain and a revolving open-air theatre. Allow 45 minutes. The gardens close for the winter.
- 04
Baroque theatre
One of the few 18th-century court theatres with its original stage machinery and sets. Tours are short, small and seasonal, so ask at the castle ticket office on arrival.
- 05
The Vltava loop
The river wraps the old town in a tight curve. Walk the bank in 30 minutes, or in summer rent a raft or canoe and float through the weirs.
How to spend the day
Staying over: take a late-morning bus from Na Knížecí or Florenc, arrive mid-afternoon, walk the old town and do the castle at 9:00 next day. As a day trip: leave Prague by 7:00, arrive around 9:45, do Tour Route I first (CZK 300, last entries before 16:00), then the tower, lunch and the castle gardens, which close at 17:00 in October. Take a bus back no later than 17:00 to reach Prague around 20:00.
Český Krumlov in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustThis is when the town is fullest and also when everything is open. Castle tours sell out by late morning, so buy Route I as soon as you arrive. The tower and museum open daily from June to August. The Five-Petalled Rose Festival in mid June brings costumed parades and very heavy crowds. Coaches leave around 16:30, and the lanes empty.
Winter
December to FebruaryThe interior tour routes and the castle gardens are closed, which removes the main reason to come for the day. The museum and tower keep going, Tuesday to Sunday with shorter hours, and the courtyards stay open. You will have the town almost to yourself, but 5 hours of bus for a walk is a weak trade. Stay a night or wait for spring.
How crowded it gets
Very busy- Busiest
- Jun-Sep, 10:30-16:30, and the festival weekend in mid June
- Quietest
- Before 10:00, after 17:00, and November to March
Day-trip coaches set the rhythm. Arrive on the 7:00 bus and do the castle first, or sleep over and walk the old town in the evening. The far bank and the castle gardens are always calmer than the main square.
How do you get to Český Krumlov from Prague?
Direct bus
- Travel time
- 2 h 35 min
- Frequency
- 8 FlixBus departures a day
- Departs from
- Na Knížecí or ÚAN Florenc
Fares are dynamic and seats sell out in summer, so book both directions in advance. RegioJet also runs the route from Na Knížecí. The bus is faster than the train, which needs a change in České Budějovice. Castle Tour Route I costs CZK 300, the museum and tower CZK 280.

Organized tour
- Travel time
- 10 to 11 hours door to door
- Frequency
- Daily
- Cost
- From € 75
- Departs from
- Powder Tower (Prašná brána), 8:30
Coach both ways, about 2.5 hours each, with a guided walk through the town and free time for lunch. Castle interiors are not included: the ticket is CZK 300, bought on site. Sensible when you cannot stay overnight and do not want to manage bus bookings.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
Shoes with grip: the lanes are steep, uneven cobbles that turn slick in rain. Castle rooms are cold even in June, so bring a layer. In summer add swimwear and sandals if you plan to raft.
What to eat
South Bohemian menus lean on freshwater fish, mainly carp and trout, plus roast duck, potato pancakes and beer from nearby České Budějovice. Riverside terraces charge for the view. The side streets across the river in Latrán are cheaper and quicker at lunch.
What you will spend
Transport is the big cost and it varies, since bus fares are dynamic. On site, Castle Tour Route I is CZK 300 and the museum with the tower CZK 280. The courtyards, the Cloak Bridge, the gardens and the old town are free. The tour from Prague starts at € 75 without castle entry.
How to get the most out of the day
- The bus has two stops in town. Get off at Špičák for the shortest walk to the castle, about 10 minutes through the Budějovice Gate.
- English-language castle tours run at set times and are fewer than the Czech ones. Ask for the next English slot before planning lunch.
- Look down into the moat between the first and second courtyards. Bears have been kept there since 1707.
- If you stay the night, book a bus back for late morning. It gives you the castle at 9:00 before the first coaches unload.
