Day trip from Amsterdam Bruges

A medieval Flemish city of canals and brick guild houses in Belgium, just under three hours from Amsterdam by train with one change.

Our verdict

Is Bruges worth a day trip from Amsterdam?

Sleep there. Or take the tour.

Too far for a relaxed day trip. The fastest train connection is 2 hours 58 minutes with a change in Brussels or Antwerp, so the return eats six hours and costs from € 39 each way, more if you book late. Stay a night and you get the city after the day visitors have left. If one day is all you have, the coach tour is the sane option: from € 49, departure at 8:30, a guided walk plus three free hours in Bruges, back around 20:30. The Belfry costs € 16 until 2 November and is closed for maintenance from 19 to 22 October 2026.

What to see and do in Bruges

  1. 01

    Markt and the Belfry

The main square under an 83-metre medieval bell tower. The climb is 366 narrow steps with timed tickets, and takes 45 minutes up and down. The carillon plays on the quarter hour.

  2. 02

Burg and the Basilica of the Holy Blood

A second square two minutes from the Markt, with the Gothic town hall and a small double chapel that keeps a relic of Christ's blood. The basilica is free and takes 15 minutes.

  3. 03

    Canal boat

Open boats leave from five landing stages for a fixed 30-minute loop past the Rozenhoedkaai and the brick backs of the houses. They run daily from March to mid-November, less in winter.

  4. 04

    Church of Our Lady

A brick tower 115 metres high and, inside, Michelangelo's marble Madonna and Child, one of the few of his sculptures to leave Italy in his lifetime. Allow 30 minutes.

  5. 05

    Begijnhof and Minnewater

White houses around a lawn planted with poplars, founded in 1245 and now home to Benedictine nuns. It is free and silent by rule. The Minnewater lake beside it is near the station.

How to spend the day

By train, take an early Eurocity Direct from Amsterdam Zuid, change at Brussels-Midi and reach Bruges before noon. Walk 15 to 20 minutes from the station to the Markt, climb the Belfry, then follow the canals to the Begijnhof. To be home the same night, leave Bruges by about 18:00. On the tour, the coach leaves Amsterdam at 8:30, starts back at 17:00 and arrives around 20:30.

Bruges in summer and in winter

Summer

June to August

The centre is at its fullest from late morning until about 17:00, when coach and cruise groups from Zeebrugge leave. The boat queues can reach 30-45 minutes at midday. Daylight lasts past 21:30, so this is the season when sleeping over pays most: the evening streets are close to empty.

Winter

December to February

The Winter Glow Christmas market fills the Markt from 20 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and December weekends are as busy as August. Canal boats run a reduced, weather-dependent service. January and February are the quietest months, cold and often wet, with most museums and churches open as usual.

How crowded it gets

Very busy
Busiest
Jul-Aug and December weekends, 11:00-17:00, between the Markt and the Begijnhof
Quietest
Before 10:00 and after 17:30; weekdays in January, February and March

Day visitors all walk the same line from the station to the Markt. Book the Belfry slot in advance and do the boat as soon as you arrive. Then head north-east towards the windmills on the ramparts, which stay quiet.

Amsterdam Zuid (Eurocity Direct) or Amsterdam Centraal (Eurostar)

Coach at 8:30, a guided walk from the Lake of Love to the Markt, then three hours free before the 17:00 departure. It is cheaper than the train and removes the connection risk, but you spend about seven hours sitting on a bus.

Practical: clothes, food and money

What to wear

Thick-soled shoes, because the whole centre is cobbled and you will walk 8-10 km. Bring a waterproof jacket in any month. Cover up for the cold in winter: you stand outside in boat queues and markets.

What to eat

Fries with mayonnaise from a stand, waffles, Flemish beef stew cooked in beer, and mussels in season from July. Bruges has its own brewery in the centre and chocolate shops on every street. Terraces on the Markt charge the most; walk two streets away.

What you will spend

On your own€ 94–120.60
With the tour€ 49

Transport dominates: trains from € 39 each way and up to € 52.30 at the flex fare, or the tour from € 49. The Belfry is € 16 in summer season. Walking the centre, the Begijnhof and the basilica are free. The boat and museums are extra.

How to get the most out of the day

  • Belgium uses the euro too, but your Dutch contactless travel card logic does not apply. Buy the Belgian train leg in the same NS International booking.
  • Left luggage lockers are at Bruges station if you are travelling on to Brussels or Ghent rather than returning to Amsterdam.
  • Many shops and some restaurants close on Sunday morning or all of Monday. The main sights stay open.
  • From the station, the walk through the Minnewater park is quieter than the main road and ends at the Begijnhof gate.

How long do you need in Bruges?

Plan 5–8 h on site, plus 2 h 58 of travel each way from Amsterdam.

When is Bruges closed?

None (Belfry shut 25 Dec, 1 Jan and 19-22 Oct 2026). Best time: Apr-Jun and Sep, midweek.
