Day trip from Rome Orvieto
An Umbrian town on a volcanic rock 100 km north of Rome, known for its striped Gothic cathedral and reached by train in about 80 minutes.
Is Orvieto worth a day trip from Rome?
Half a day, if the trains line up.
Worth it for a slow half day, but check the timetable first. In October 2026 only two direct morning trains leave Termini: the 08:20 regional, which takes 2 hours, and the 10:15 Intercity, 1 h 22. Coming back, the 15:27 and 17:29 take 1 h 38 to 2 h 16. That makes it a 9-hour outing for 3 to 4 hours in a small town. What you get is the Duomo, € 8 with its museum and underground rooms, and a quiet lunch a long way from Rome's crowds. If train times bother you, pick Ostia Antica.

What to see and do in Orvieto
- 01
The Duomo
A Gothic cathedral with a gold mosaic facade and black and white stone bands. Inside, the San Brizio chapel has Signorelli's Last Judgement frescoes. Allow 45 minutes.
- 02
St Patrick's Well
A 16th-century well with two spiral staircases that never meet, 248 steps down and the same back up. It is next to the funicular's upper station.
- 03
Orvieto Underground
Guided visits of about 45 minutes through caves cut into the soft rock under the town: olive presses, wells and dovecotes. Tours leave from the square by the Duomo.
- 04
Torre del Moro
The clock tower halfway along Corso Cavour. A lift covers part of the climb and stairs do the rest, for a full view over rooftops and the valley.
- 05
The cliff edge walk
Follow the lanes of the medieval quarter west to the ramparts for views of vineyards and the plain below. Free, and about 30 minutes at a slow pace.

How to spend the day
Take the 10:15 Intercity from Roma Termini and arrive in Orvieto at 11:37. The funicular opposite the station climbs to the old town. Walk Corso Cavour to the Duomo and go inside before lunch, then eat and wander to the edge of the cliff for the view. Be back at the station for the 15:27, in Termini at 17:05, or stay for the 17:29, in at 19:45. Later trains leave at 19:43 and 21:29.
Orvieto in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustOrvieto stands about 300 metres up on its rock and catches a breeze, so it runs slightly cooler than Rome, though the midday sun on the cathedral square is fierce. The caves stay near 15°C all year, a good reason to book the underground tour for early afternoon. Evenings are lively, but the 17:29 train decides your day.
Winter
December to FebruaryIt is colder and windier than Rome, and fog can sit in the valley below the cliff. The Duomo, the well and the underground tours all keep running, with shorter hours. This is a good winter trip if you treat it as a cathedral visit and a long warm lunch.
How crowded it gets
Quiet- Busiest
- Weekends from April to October, 11:00-15:00 around the Duomo
- Quietest
- Weekdays all year; winter outside the Christmas period
Coach groups come for the cathedral and leave within two hours. Go into the Duomo right after you arrive or after 15:00, and spend the middle of the day in the western lanes.

There is no tour to Orvieto alone. This coach trip goes to Assisi first, a 3-hour drive, then Civita di Bagnoregio, and reaches Orvieto last for a short free visit. Pick it only if you want all three; for Orvieto itself the train is cheaper and gives you more time.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
Flat shoes for cobbles and for the 248 steps of the well. Bring a jumper for the caves even in August, and a windproof coat in winter. Cover shoulders for the Duomo.
What to eat
Order umbrichelli, thick hand-rolled pasta, with truffle or a spicy tomato sauce, and wild boar or roast pigeon as a main. The white wine is Orvieto Classico. Trattorias sit in the side streets off Corso Cavour, a few minutes from the cathedral square.
What you will spend
A cheap day. The train is € 10.10 by regional or € 13.90 by Intercity each way, and the Duomo ticket is € 8 with its museum and underground rooms. The funicular, the well and the cave tour each add a small fee. Walking the town is free.
How to get the most out of the day
- The funicular runs about every 10 minutes and a minibus waits at the top for the Duomo. On foot it is 15 minutes along Corso Cavour.
- Sightseeing inside the Duomo pauses during Sunday morning services. On a Sunday, see the well and the caves first and the cathedral after lunch.
- Many shops and some restaurants close between about 13:00 and 16:00. Have lunch by 13:30 or you will find kitchens shut.
- Intercity tickets carry a seat reservation and can sell out on Fridays and Sundays. Buy that one ahead even though the regional needs no booking.
How long do you need in Orvieto?
Plan 3–4 h on site, plus 1 h 22 of travel each way from Rome.
When is Orvieto closed?
