Worth half a day
Our verdict

Is Castel Gandolfo worth a day trip from Rome?

A morning. Never on a Tuesday.

Go for a morning, and not on a Tuesday. A € 2.10 train from Termini takes 41 minutes and leaves you a short, steep walk below the main square. The Papal Palace, where popes spent their summers, costs € 12 with its Secret Garden. On weekdays entry runs only from 9:00 to 13:00, on Saturdays until 17:00 and on Sundays from 10:00 to 17:00. It is closed every Tuesday, all of July and part of August. Afterwards, walk down to the shore of Lake Albano for lunch. Trains back leave hourly, but only every 2 hours on Sundays.

What to see and do in Castel Gandolfo

  1. 01

    The Papal Palace

The popes' summer residence, open as a museum since 2016. You walk through the portrait gallery, the throne room and the private apartment in about an hour.

  2. 02

    The papal gardens

Formal terraces, a Roman emperor's villa ruins and a working farm on the estate behind the palace. Visits are guided and booked ahead through the Vatican Museums.

  3. 03

    Piazza della Liberta

The small main square in front of the palace, with a Bernini church, a fountain and cafe tables. Everything in town is within five minutes of it.

  4. 04

    Lake Albano viewpoint and shore

The town sits on the rim of a volcanic crater lake. Terraces behind the square look straight down, and a steep 20-minute path leads to the water.

How to spend the day

Take the 08:21 from Roma Termini and arrive at 09:02. Walk up to Piazza della Liberta and go into the Papal Palace, open from 9:00, with last entry at 13:00 on weekdays. Come out by late morning and have lunch on the square or down by the lake. Trains back leave at 13:51, in Termini at 14:34, and then at 14:51 and 15:51. The last direct one is the 20:51.

Castel Gandolfo in summer and in winter

Summer

June to August

This is the season the town was built for. It sits about 430 metres up and stays a few degrees cooler than Rome, and you can swim or rent a kayak on the lake shore. Romans come on Sundays for lunch, so tables fill. When the pope is in residence, expect security checks around the square.

Winter

December to February

The palace museum stays open, with shorter hours on weekdays, but the lake beaches are closed and the terraces are cold and windy. Fog can hide the crater. It still works as a half day on a clear Saturday: palace in the morning, a long lunch, the train back before dark at 17:00.

How crowded it gets

Quiet
Busiest
Sundays from May to September, 12:00-16:00; summer days when the pope is in town
Quietest
Weekday mornings all year

Come on a weekday and arrive when the palace opens. Weekday hours end early in the afternoon, so do the museum first and leave the lake and lunch for later.

Roma Termini

Direct regional trains on the Albano line leave Termini at 07:21, 08:21 and 09:00, then hourly at :21 from 12:21, for a flat € 2.10 each way. The 10:28 needs a change at Ciampino. On Sundays the morning choice is the 08:21 or the 12:21, so check the return before you go.

Practical: clothes, food and money

What to wear

Shoulders and knees covered for the palace, which follows Vatican dress rules. Wear shoes that can handle the steep path to the lake, and bring swimwear in summer and a windproof jacket in winter.

What to eat

This is Castelli Romani country: porchetta, sliced to order, with crusty bread and white Castelli or Frascati wine. Lake fish also appears on menus. Restaurants with terraces line the crater rim behind the square, and simpler places with paper tablecloths sit on the lake shore.

What you will spend

On your own€ 16.20

Little beyond lunch. The regional train from Termini is a low fixed fare, the square and the lake views are free, and the main ticket is the Papal Palace. Garden tours cost extra. A lakeside sunbed or kayak is an optional summer cost.

How to get the most out of the day

  • Trains leave Roma Termini on the Albano Laziale line and take about 45 minutes. They run about hourly, less often on Sundays.
  • The station is below the town. The walk up to the square takes 10 minutes and is steep, with steps.
  • Palace opening days and hours change through the year and around papal stays. Check the Vatican Museums website the week before and book there.
  • Combine it with Ostia Antica or a Rome morning if you like. Three to four hours in town covers the palace, lunch and the view.
