Day trip from Florence Cinque Terre
Five coastal villages in Liguria linked by a short train line and footpaths, about 150 km north-west of Florence and 2.5 hours away by train.
Is Cinque Terre worth a day trip from Florence?
Sleep there. Or take the coach.
Not as a comfortable day trip. The regional route takes 2 h 33 to La Spezia with a change at Pisa, and Monterosso is 3 h 12 from Florence. Leave at 07:00, be back near 21:00, and you get about 7 hours on the coast for 6 on trains. It costs € 31.80 in tickets plus a Cinque Terre Card at € 22 to € 35 depending on the day. One night in La Spezia or a village changes everything. If you cannot spare the night, the coach tour is the less tiring way, because you sleep on the bus and nobody misses a connection.

What to see and do in Cinque Terre
- 01
Vernazza harbour
A small square that opens straight onto a harbour with a breakwater and a castle tower above. Walk out along the breakwater for the view back. An hour with lunch is enough.
- 02
Monterosso beaches
The only village with long stretches of sand, split between paid sunbed sections and smaller free ones. It is the place to swim. The old town is 10 minutes from the station through a tunnel.
- 03
Blue Trail, Monterosso to Vernazza
The coastal footpath between the two northern villages, about 3.5 km of stone steps and terraces that takes 1 h 30 to 2 hours. The Cinque Terre Card is your trail ticket.
- 04
Manarola viewpoint
A paved path from the harbour climbs in 10 minutes to the headland facing the village, where the well-known photo of stacked houses is taken. Go late afternoon, when the sun is behind you.
- 05
Via dell'Amore
The flat cliff path between Riomaggiore and Manarola, about 1 km. Entry is by timed booking through the park, with an extra charge on top of the card, so reserve before you travel.

How to spend the day
Take the 07:00 from Santa Maria Novella, change at Pisa Centrale, and reach La Spezia Centrale at 09:33. Buy the Cinque Terre Card at the station and ride to Monterosso first, arriving 10:12. Work back south: Vernazza for lunch, then Manarola and Riomaggiore. Two or three villages is realistic, five is a blur. Be at La Spezia for the direct 17:40 or 18:40, in Florence at 20:08 or 21:08. The last direct regional leaves at 19:16.
Cinque Terre in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustJune to August brings swimming weather, boats between the villages and trains so full that you sometimes wait for the next one. Trails are exposed and hot by 11:00, so walk first and swim after. Card prices rise on high demand days. Start at Monterosso, the farthest village, and work back toward La Spezia against the flow.
Winter
December to FebruaryFrom 2 November to mid March the Express timetable stops, village trains thin out and no boats run. Trails close after heavy rain, many restaurants and rooms shut, and the sun sets before 17:00. With 6 hours on trains for a short grey day, it is not worth it from Florence. Go between April and October instead.
How crowded it gets
Very busy- Busiest
- May-Sep, 10:30-17:00, weekends and cruise ship days
- Quietest
- Before 10:00, after 18:00, and weekdays in April or October
Platforms and the main lanes clog at midday. Pick two or three villages, stand at the far end of the platform where carriages are emptier, and take the trail or a harbour swim while the lunch crowd fills the streets.

Organized tour
- Travel time
- 12.5 hours door to door
- Frequency
- Daily
- Cost
- From € 41.65
- Departs from
- Piazzale Montelungo, behind Santa Maria Novella station
A coach takes about 2 hours to La Spezia or Levanto. The cheapest option is transport only and you buy your own village trains. The guided option adds an assistant, train tickets and a boat leg, which does not run from November to March. Long day, early start.

Train
- Travel time
- 2 h 13 to 2 h 33 to La Spezia
- Frequency
- About hourly with a change at Pisa, a few direct
- Cost
- € 15.90 each way
- Departs from
- Firenze Santa Maria Novella
Regional trains cost € 15.90 at a fixed price. Combinations with an Intercity or Freccia from Pisa save 20 minutes and cost € 20.80 to € 34.70. At La Spezia switch to the Cinque Terre Express. Single hops cost € 5 to € 10, so the day card pays off at four or five rides.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
Closed shoes with tread if you walk any trail: the park turns away sandals and flip-flops on the paths. Bring swimwear and a towel from June to September, a windproof layer on the boat, sunscreen and a litre of water.
What to eat
Ligurian food is the point: trofie with pesto, focaccia, fried anchovies from Monterosso and paper cones of fried seafood to eat on the harbour wall. Sciacchetrà is the local sweet wine. Buy breakfast and water at Santa Maria Novella, because the 07:00 start leaves no time.
What you will spend
Trains to La Spezia are € 15.90 each way and the 1-day Cinque Terre Treno MS Card costs € 22, € 29.50 or € 35 depending on the day. Beaches have free sections, sunbeds and boats are extra. The tour starts from € 41.65 for transport only.
How to get the most out of the day
- Check the park's trail status page the evening before. Sections close without notice after rain, and a closed path changes which villages make sense.
- The Cinque Terre Card must be stamped once at a platform machine before your first village train. Inspectors fine unstamped cards on the spot.
- Corniglia sits on a ridge above its station, reached by 382 steps or a shuttle bus included in the card. Skip it on a day trip.
- Seats on the 17:40 and 18:40 direct trains go fast in summer. Board at La Spezia Centrale 10 minutes early, since regional seats cannot be reserved.
