Our verdict

Is Setúbal and Arrábida worth a day trip from Lisbon?

Only with a tour or a car.

Not by public transport, at least not outside summer. The Fertagus train gets you to Setúbal in 58 minutes for € 5.70, but the park's beaches and viewpoints are strung along a road beyond the city. Buses to Figueirinha and Creiro only run in the bathing season, roughly June to mid-September, when the road is also closed to private cars from 07:00 to 20:00. The rest of the year you need a car or the coach tour, which links Palmela castle, the park road, Portinho da Arrábida, Sesimbra and two wineries in 8 hours from € 85. Good with a tour, frustrating alone.

What to see and do in Setúbal and Arrábida

  1. 01

    Portinho da Arrábida

A sheltered bay of clear, calm water under the hills, with a narrow strip of sand and a few restaurants on stilts. The usual swimming stop, for 45 minutes to an hour.

  2. 02

    The park road

The N379-1 climbs along the ridge of the Serra da Arrábida, high above the sea, with lay-by viewpoints over the coves and the Tróia peninsula. About 30 minutes with stops.

  3. 03

    Palmela castle

A hilltop fortress with a view that reaches Lisbon on a clear day. The walls and courtyards are free to walk. Half an hour is enough.

  4. 04

    Azeitão wineries

Cellars in the village of Azeitão that produce Moscatel de Setúbal, a sweet fortified wine. A visit with tasting lasts about an hour, and the tour includes two.

  5. 05

    Sesimbra

A fishing town in a bay west of the park, with a long beach and a line of fish restaurants behind it. The lunch stop on the tour, usually 90 minutes.

How to spend the day

With the tour: meet at the Hard Rock Café on Restauradores square in the morning, cross the Tagus, and stop at Palmela castle and a first winery before noon. Drive the park road to Portinho da Arrábida, with time to swim in summer, then lunch in Sesimbra. A second tasting in Azeitão follows, and you are back in Lisbon after about 8 hours. On your own in July or August, take a Fertagus train before 09:00 and the 4474 bus to Figueirinha.

Setúbal and Arrábida in summer and in winter

Summer

June to August

This is the only season when you can do it alone: buses 4474 and 4470 run from Setúbal to Figueirinha and Creiro while the road is closed to cars. The beaches are small and full by 11:00 at weekends, and the water stays cool. On the tour you get time to swim at Portinho, so pack swimwear.

Winter

December to February

The beach buses do not run, the stilt restaurants at Portinho keep short hours and nobody swims. What still works is the tour's inland half: Palmela castle, the two wineries and lunch in Sesimbra. On a wet or hazy day the ridge road shows nothing. Go only with a clear forecast.

How crowded it gets

Busy
Busiest
Jul-Aug weekends, 11:00-17:00 on the beaches
Quietest
Oct-May; summer weekdays before 10:30

In July and August, go on a weekday and be on a bus from Setúbal before 10:00. Beaches have a capacity limit and the afternoon buses back are crowded, so leave before 17:00 or after 18:30.

Cost
€ 5.70 each way

Roma-Areeiro (also Entrecampos and Sete Rios)

Fertagus over the 25 de Abril bridge to Setúbal, the end of the line. Not every Fertagus train runs through to Setúbal, so check the destination board. In the bathing season, Carris Metropolitana lines 4474 (Figueirinha) and 4470 (Creiro) run from Setúbal to the beaches.

Lisbon, over the 25 de Abril or Vasco da Gama bridge

The flexible option from mid-September to May. From 4 June to 15 September 2026 the beach road was closed to private cars between 07:00 and 20:00, so in summer you park in Setúbal and use the buses anyway.

Practical: clothes, food and money

What to wear

Swimwear, a towel, a hat and water shoes in summer: the coves have pebbles in the shallows. Trainers for the castle. From October to April bring a windproof jacket for the ridge viewpoints.

What to eat

Setúbal's dish is choco frito, fried cuttlefish strips with chips, sold all over the centre. Azeitão makes a soft sheep's cheese and small rolled sponge cakes called tortas. Sesimbra grills fish by weight. The beaches have very few places to eat, so carry lunch and water.

What you will spend

On your own€ 11.40
With the tour€ 85

On the tour, from € 85, transport, the guide and six tastings are covered and you pay only for lunch in Sesimbra. Alone, the Fertagus train is € 5.70 each way, and the beach bus or a taxi is on top. The beaches and Palmela castle are free.

How to get the most out of the day

  • On the tour, eat a proper breakfast. The first tasting comes before noon and lunch is not until early afternoon.
  • Setúbal station is a 15-minute walk from the bus stops for the beaches. Ask at the station which stop the 4474 uses that day.
  • Setúbal's covered market, Mercado do Livramento, is worth 20 minutes for the fish stalls and tile panels. It is shut on Mondays.
  • Boat trips to look for the Sado estuary's resident dolphins leave from Setúbal harbour. They take about three hours and need booking ahead.
