Worth half a day
Our verdict

Is Alcalá de Henares worth a day trip from Madrid?

A morning is enough. Skip Mondays.

Go for a morning, not a day. The Cercanías takes 39 minutes from Atocha, runs every 10 to 15 minutes at peak times and costs € 3.40 each way, so this is the cheapest and simplest trip on the list. The Cervantes Birthplace Museum is free and needs under an hour. It is closed on Mondays. Add the arcaded Calle Mayor, Plaza de Cervantes and the university college, which you can only enter on a paid guided visit. Three hours covers it. If you have one spare day in Madrid, Toledo or Segovia should come first.

What to see and do in Alcalá de Henares

  1. 01

    University of Alcalá

The Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso, founded in 1499, is seen on a guided visit of about 45 minutes: the facade, three courtyards, the chapel and the Paraninfo hall with its coffered ceiling.

  2. 02

    Cervantes Birthplace Museum

A rebuilt 16th-century house on Calle Mayor, furnished as a well-off home of the period, with early editions of Don Quixote upstairs. Free, closed on Mondays. Allow 30 minutes.

  3. 03

    Calle Mayor

A medieval street of about 400 m lined on both sides with stone-columned arcades, once the main street of the Jewish quarter. Shops and tapas bars sit under the arches.

  4. 04

    Corral de Comedias

A courtyard theatre opened in 1601 on Plaza de Cervantes and still staging plays. Short guided visits run from Tuesday to Sunday and show how the building changed over four centuries.

  5. 05

    Complutum

The remains of the Roman town on the western edge of the city, with the mosaics of the House of Hippolytus under a modern roof. It is a 25-minute walk from the centre.

How to spend the day

Take the 09:27 Cercanías from Atocha and arrive at 10:06. Walk to Plaza de Cervantes, then down Calle Mayor to the Cervantes Birthplace Museum, open from 10:00. Go back to the university college and ask at the door for the next guided visit. Have lunch on or near Calle Mayor. Trains back leave at 14:35 and 15:03, reaching Atocha at 15:14 and 15:42. The last one is at 23:22.

Alcalá de Henares in summer and in winter

Summer

June to August

From June to August Alcalá is as hot as Madrid, with highs of 32 to 34 °C, but the arcades of Calle Mayor give shade for most of the walk. University visits follow a summer timetable, with Sunday tours in the morning only. The city is quiet in August, and some bars close for holidays. Go in the morning and be back by 16:00.

Winter

December to February

From December to February this is a sound choice for a cold or short day: the ride is about 40 minutes, the sights are close together and most of the visit is indoors or under arcades. Expect highs of 10 to 12 °C. The Cervantes house closes at 18:00 on weekdays. Storks are already back on the rooftop nests by February.

How crowded it gets

Quiet
Busiest
Cervantes week around 9 October, 23 April, Sat-Sun 12:00-14:00
Quietest
Tue-Fri all year

Most visitors are Madrid families at the weekend, and even then the only wait is for a university tour slot. During the Cervantes week market in October the centre is packed. Book the university visit before you travel.

Lines C-2 and C-7 both run direct, with no change. First train from Atocha is at 05:14 and the last one back leaves Alcalá at 23:22. Buy a single each way at the machines. The old town is a walk from Alcalá de Henares station.

Organized tour

Travel time
5 hours 30 min door to door
Cost

Calle San Bernardo 7, central Madrid

A coach trip with a 90-minute guided walk, entry to the Cervantes house and the university, then 2 hours free. The guide speaks Spanish only. At € 47 against € 6.80 for the train, it only makes sense if you want the university visit arranged for you.

Practical: clothes, food and money

What to wear

Ordinary city clothes and comfortable flat shoes. The whole centre is level, a rarity on this list. A coat in winter and a hat in summer for the open stretch across Plaza de Cervantes.

What to eat

Alcalá's bars serve a free tapa of your choice with each drink, so three stops along Calle Mayor and the side streets make a lunch. For dessert try costrada, layers of puff pastry, custard and meringue, and the sugared almonds sold by the Clarisas convent.

What you will spend

On your own€ 6.80
With the tour€ 47

The cheapest day out from Madrid: € 3.40 each way on the Cercanías and free entry to the Cervantes house. The university tour, the Corral de Comedias and Complutum charge small fees. Lunch by tapas costs only the drinks. The tour from € 47 is hard to justify.

How to get the most out of the day

  • The same Cercanías trains also stop at Recoletos, Nuevos Ministerios and Chamartín. Board there if your hotel is in the north of Madrid.
  • University tours run at fixed times, with one in English on Saturdays. Check the day's timetable on the university's visits page.
  • The Cervantes Prize is handed over in the Paraninfo on 23 April. The university closes to visitors around that ceremony.
  • Look up along Calle Mayor and at the old colleges. Dozens of white stork pairs nest on the towers, most visibly from February to July.

How long do you need in Alcalá de Henares?
