El Escorial

Day trip from Madrid El Escorial

The granite monastery-palace built by Philip II in the Guadarrama foothills, with a royal pantheon and a library, about 1 hour 10 minutes from Atocha by Cercanías train.

Worth half a day
Our verdict

Is El Escorial worth a day trip from Madrid?

Half a day. Never on a Monday.

Worth it as a half day, and cheap. The Cercanías train takes 1 hour 7 to 1 hour 10 minutes from Atocha and the monastery ticket is € 14. One building is the whole visit: allow 2 to 3 hours inside, then lunch in the town. It is closed every Monday. The train station sits in the lower town of El Escorial, and the monastery is up the hill in San Lorenzo, so count the uphill walk or the local bus. Trains run about once an hour, which punishes a missed departure.

What to see and do in El Escorial

  1. 01

    Royal Library

A 54 m hall with a frescoed barrel vault and shelves designed by the monastery's architect. The books stand with their gilded page edges facing out. Allow 15 to 20 minutes.

  2. 02

    Pantheon of the Kings

An octagonal marble crypt under the high altar holding the tombs of almost every Spanish monarch since Charles V. The staircase down is steep. About 20 minutes with the princes' vaults.

  3. 03

    Basilica

The church at the centre of the building, under a 92 m dome, with gilded bronze statues of Charles V and Philip II kneeling beside the altar. Allow 20 minutes.

  4. 04

    Habsburg palace

Philip II's plain private rooms, including the bedroom with a window onto the altar, and the 60 m Hall of Battles painted with one continuous fresco. About 40 minutes.

  5. 05

Friars' Garden and the Herrería woods

A box-hedge terrace along the south wall, free to enter, with views over the plain towards Madrid. Paths continue into oak woods below. Allow 30 to 60 minutes.

How to spend the day

Take the 09:25 Cercanías from Atocha and arrive at El Escorial at 10:32. Walk up through the park or take the local bus to the monastery, which opens at 10:00. Do the basilica, the royal pantheon, the Habsburg rooms and the library in that order. Lunch in San Lorenzo. Trains back leave at 14:10 and 15:10, reaching Atocha at 15:20 and 16:20. The last one on a weekday is at 22:11.

El Escorial in summer and in winter

Summer

June to August

From June to August the town, at about 1,000 m, is where Madrid families escape the heat. Expect highs near 29 °C and cool granite halls inside. The monastery stays open until 19:00 from April to September. Weekends are busy with locals, and the town's own festival around 10 August fills the streets and terraces. Trains are emptier than in term time.

Winter

December to February

From December to February the monastery closes at 18:00 and the building is cold inside, so keep your coat on. Snow on the Guadarrama behind it is common, and the paths in the woods turn muddy. Nothing closes for the season. It is one of the better winter trips, because the whole visit is indoors and the queues disappear.

How crowded it gets

Busy
Busiest
Weekends all year, Aug, Tue-Fri 10:30-13:00 in school term
Quietest
Tue-Fri after 14:00; Dec-Feb weekdays

School groups and coach tours come in the morning and are gone by 14:00. On a weekday, arriving at 13:00 and eating late gives you half-empty rooms. Sunday afternoons draw locals when entry is free for some visitors.

How do you get to El Escorial from Madrid?

Cercanías train

Travel time
1 h 07 to 1 h 10 + uphill walk
Frequency
About hourly, 20 trains on weekdays
Cost
€ 8.10 return
Departs from
Madrid Atocha Cercanías (also Chamartín)

Board the Cercanías signed El Escorial, shown as C-8a on the map. From Sol you change at Chamartín. Buy a single each way at the machines or tap a bank card at the gates. The station is in the lower town, below the monastery.

Bus 661 or 664

Travel time
About 1 hour
Departs from
Moncloa bus interchange

Interurban buses 661 and 664 run from Moncloa to the bus station in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, in the upper town near the monastery, which saves the climb from the train. We could not confirm the current fare and timetable with the regional transport authority, so check them at Moncloa.

Organized tour

Travel time
5 hours door to door
Cost
From € 62.10
Departs from
Calle San Nicolás 15, near Ópera metro

A half-day coach with a guide inside the monastery and a stop at the basilica of the Valley of Cuelgamuros, which you cannot reach by public transport. That second stop is the real reason to pay almost three times the do-it-yourself cost. The monastery is closed on Mondays.

Practical: clothes, food and money

What to wear

A layer for inside even in July, since the stone rooms stay cold. Comfortable shoes for the climb from the station and about 3 km of corridors. Shoulders covered in the basilica. A warm coat from November to March.

What to eat

San Lorenzo is mountain cooking: grilled Guadarrama beef, bean stews and, in season, game. Restaurants and tapas bars line Calle Floridablanca and the squares just above the monastery. In good weather, buy bread and cheese in town and eat at the picnic tables in the Herrería woods.

What you will spend

On your own€ 22.10
With the tour€ 62.10

This is a low-cost trip: € 4.05 each way on the Cercanías and € 14 for the monastery. The local bus up the hill is a small extra. The garden, the woods and the town are free. The tour from € 62.10 only makes sense for the Valley of Cuelgamuros stop.

How to get the most out of the day

  • The walk up from the station through the Casita del Príncipe park takes 20 to 25 minutes and climbs steadily. The local bus meets most trains.
  • Large bags and backpacks must go in the lockers at the entrance. Photography is not allowed inside the monastery rooms.
  • Patrimonio Nacional offers free entry on Wednesday and Sunday afternoons to EU and Ibero-American citizens. Bring ID, and expect a queue.
  • Philip II's Seat, a rock viewpoint over the monastery, is a 45-minute walk each way through the woods. It needs a full day, not a half.

How long do you need in El Escorial?

Plan 3–4 h on site, plus 1 h 07 of travel each way from Madrid.

When is El Escorial closed?

Monday. Best time: Tuesday to Saturday morning; Oct-Mar it closes at 18:00.
