Day trip from Madrid Córdoba

An Andalusian city built around the Mosque-Cathedral and its old Jewish quarter, far south of Madrid in Andalusia but only 1 hour 44 minutes away by AVE train.

Our verdict

Is Córdoba worth a day trip from Madrid?

Go, if you accept the fare.

Yes, it works in a day, and the train is the reason. The AVE takes 1 hour 44 minutes from Puerta de Atocha and there are about 30 trains a day, with returns until 21:36. The catch is the cost. Renfe's timetable lists € 57 to € 70 each way, so the day runs past € 125 before lunch. The Mosque-Cathedral costs € 15 and was open from 10:00 to 19:00 on the day we checked. No partner coach tour does this route from Madrid. From June to August the afternoon heat makes it a poor choice.

What to see and do in Córdoba

  1. 01

    Mosque-Cathedral

A prayer hall of 856 columns under red and white double arches, with a Renaissance cathedral built into its centre. Find the mihrab, with its gold mosaics, on the far wall. Allow 90 minutes.

  2. 02

    Bell tower

The former minaret, encased in a 54 m Baroque tower. Timed groups climb every half hour for a view over the orange tree courtyard. A separate ticket and about 30 minutes.

  3. 03

    Jewish quarter and synagogue

A tangle of white lanes north-west of the Mosque. The synagogue, from 1315, is a single small room with carved plaster walls. Calleja de las Flores frames the tower. Allow an hour.

  4. 04

    Roman bridge and Calahorra tower

A 16-arch bridge over the Guadalquivir, pedestrian only, rebuilt many times on Roman foundations. Walk across to the tower for the view back to the Mosque. Twenty minutes.

  5. 05

    Alcázar of the Christian Monarchs

A 14th-century fortress with terraced gardens, long pools and Roman mosaics indoors. It is closed on Mondays and keeps morning-only hours in summer. Allow an hour.

How to spend the day

Take the 08:00 AVE from Puerta de Atocha and arrive at 09:44. Go straight to the Mosque-Cathedral for the 10:00 opening and give it 90 minutes. Then the Jewish quarter and the synagogue, and lunch there. After lunch, cross the Roman bridge and visit the Alcázar gardens. Trains back leave at 18:37 and 19:58, arriving in Madrid at 20:32 and 21:53. The last AVE is at 20:56 and a final Avlo leaves at 21:36.

Córdoba in summer and in winter

Summer

June to August

From June to August Córdoba is among the hottest cities in Europe, with average highs of 36 to 37 °C and many days over 40 °C. The streets empty from 14:00 to 19:00 and the Alcázar closes at 14:15. If you must go, take the first train, see the Mosque at 08:30, finish outdoors by 13:00 and ride home after lunch.

Winter

December to February

December to February suits Córdoba well: highs of 15 to 17 °C, clear skies on most days and the oranges ripe on the street trees. It is cool at 08:00 and after dark. The Mosque-Cathedral closes earlier, around 18:00, and nothing shuts for the season. With lower demand, this is also when train fares tend to be kindest.

How crowded it gets

Very busy
Busiest
First half of May, Easter week, Apr and Oct weekends, 11:00-14:00
Quietest
Nov-Feb weekdays; Jul-Aug, for the wrong reason

Tour groups enter the Mosque from 10:30 and Calleja de las Flores becomes a queue. Be inside at opening, walk to the mihrab first and leave the lanes of the Jewish quarter for after 15:00, when day groups have left.

AVE, Avlo, Alvia and Intercity trains all run to Córdoba station. The fares above are the ones Renfe lists on its timetable page. Fares in the booking system move with demand, so check the date you want before you commit. Monday to Saturday the Mosque-Cathedral has a free visit from 8:30 to 9:30.

Practical: clothes, food and money

What to wear

Shoulders and knees covered in the Mosque-Cathedral, and hats off inside. Thin-soled shoes are tiring on the pebble paving. In summer wear loose long sleeves and a hat, and carry water. A jacket in winter.

What to eat

Start with salmorejo, a thick cold tomato and bread cream with ham and egg. Then flamenquín, a fried roll of pork and ham, fried aubergine with cane honey, or oxtail stew. The dry local wine is Montilla-Moriles. Taverns fill the Jewish quarter and the streets around Plaza de la Corredera.

What you will spend

On your own€ 129–155

The train is the cost: € 57-70 each way, against € 15 for the Mosque-Cathedral. The tower, the Alcázar and the synagogue are small extras. Walking the Jewish quarter and the bridge is free, and so is the Mosque from 8:30 to 9:30, Monday to Saturday.

How to get the most out of the day

  • To use the free 8:30 slot you need a train that arrives before 08:15 or a night in town. Visitors are cleared out at 09:30.
  • The station is 25 minutes on foot from the Mosque through the modern centre. City bus 3 and taxis cover it in ten.
  • During the patio festival, in the first half of May, private courtyards open for free with long queues. Go on a weekday morning.
  • In summer visit the Alcázar before lunch, not after. Its ticket office shuts around 14:00 from mid June to mid September.
