Day trip from Paris Rouen
The old capital of Normandy, with the cathedral Monet painted, half-timbered streets and the square where Joan of Arc died, 1 h 13 min from Saint-Lazare.
Is Rouen worth a day trip from Paris?
Go. A full day on foot.
Yes. Rouen is a real city day, not a single monument: the cathedral, the Gros-Horloge street, the Saint-Maclou quarter and Place du Vieux-Marché, where Joan of Arc was burned in 1431, are all within walking distance of each other. The fastest train takes 1 h 13 min and there are 33 a day, with fares from € 10 each way. The cathedral is free. The Historial Jeanne d'Arc costs € 12 and is closed on Monday, and on Monday the cathedral only opens at 14:00. So pick any other day. Slower trains take about 1 h 35 min, check the duration before you buy.

What to see and do in Rouen
- 01
Notre-Dame cathedral
The Gothic cathedral Monet painted more than 30 times, with a cast-iron spire 151 metres high, the tallest in France. Entry is free. It opens at 14:00 on Mondays. Allow 40 minutes.
- 02
Gros-Horloge
A Renaissance arch over the main pedestrian street, carrying a one-handed astronomical clock with a 14th-century mechanism. You can climb the belfry beside it for a view over the roofs.
- 03
Place du Vieux-Marché
The square where Joan of Arc was burned on 30 May 1431. A tall cross marks the spot, next to a 1979 church with 16th-century stained glass and a small covered market.
- 04
Musée des Beaux-Arts
One of the strongest painting collections outside Paris, with Caravaggio, Velázquez and rooms of Monet and Sisley. The permanent collection is free. Closed on Tuesdays. Allow 1.5 hours.
- 05
Historial Jeanne d'Arc
A multimedia retelling of Joan's trial, staged in the archbishop's palace where she was sentenced. Visits are timed and last about 75 minutes. Closed on Mondays.

How to spend the day
Take the 7:40 from Saint-Lazare, which reached Rouen Rive Droite at 8:58 on the October 2026 timetable. Walk down rue Jeanne d'Arc to the cathedral, open from 9:00. Be at the Historial Jeanne d'Arc, beside the cathedral, when it opens at 10:00. Lunch around 12:30 near Place du Vieux-Marché, then the Gros-Horloge street and the Saint-Maclou quarter. A train around 17:00 puts you in Paris by 18:30. The last one back left at 21:01.
Rouen in summer and in winter
Summer
June to AugustFrom late May to late September the cathedral front becomes a screen for a free light show after dark, around 23:00 in June and 22:00 by late August. A day tripper needs a late train or a hotel to see it. By day the half-timbered streets are busy but never jammed, and terraces fill the Vieux-Marché square. River cruise groups arrive mid-morning.
Winter
December to FebruaryRouen holds up in winter because the museums and the cathedral do not depend on the weather. Expect grey skies and drizzle: Normandy is wetter than Paris. A Christmas market sets up by the cathedral from late November. Daylight ends by 17:00, so see the facades first and keep the fine arts museum for the afternoon.
How crowded it gets
Quiet- Busiest
- Saturday afternoons, Jul-Aug, Christmas market weekends
- Quietest
- Weekday mornings; Jan-Mar
There are no queues to plan around. The only timed visit is the Joan of Arc museum, which you should book on weekends. Saturdays bring shoppers to rue du Gros-Horloge, and a Wednesday or Thursday is calmer.
How do you get to Rouen from Paris?

- Paris Saint-Lazare
All trains are direct and arrive at Rouen Rive Droite, at the top of rue Jeanne d'Arc. The first leaves Paris at 5:46 and the last at 22:15. Some are sold as NOMAD RÉSA with a reserved seat on one specific train, so check which kind of ticket you hold before boarding another one.

Practical: clothes, food and money
What to wear
Cobbles everywhere, so wear flat shoes. Carry a rain jacket in any month. Churches are unheated and ask for covered shoulders. The centre is compact, about 15 minutes on foot from the station to the cathedral.
What to eat
Restaurants line the Vieux-Marché square and the streets behind the cathedral. Rouen's own dish is pressed duck, canard à la rouennaise, served in a few dining rooms. Easier at lunch: apple tart, cider, and heart-shaped Neufchâtel cheese from the market hall on the square. Apple sugar is the local sweet.
What you will spend
The train from Saint-Lazare is the main cost, and booking a specific train early lowers it. The cathedral, the churches, the old streets and the permanent collections of the city museums are free. Paid extras are the Joan of Arc museum and the Gros-Horloge belfry. Lunch is the other variable.
How to get the most out of the day
- Get off at Rouen-Rive-Droite, the main station. Walk straight down rue Jeanne-d'Arc and you reach the Gros-Horloge street in about 10 minutes.
- Monday and Tuesday are the weak days: the cathedral opens only at 14:00 on Mondays, and the fine arts museum is shut on Tuesdays.
- Add the Aître Saint-Maclou, a 16th-century plague cemetery courtyard with skulls carved on its timbers, five minutes east of the cathedral. It is free.
- Trains take about 1 h 20 min to 1 h 30 min from Saint-Lazare. Rouen alone fills 5 to 6 hours on the ground.
