Our verdict

Is Loire Valley worth a day trip from Paris?

One château alone, two with a tour.

For more than one château in a day, take the tour. The châteaux are far apart and no bus links them. On your own you can do Chambord: a direct train from Austerlitz to Blois-Chambord in 1 h 23 min, then the Rémi line 2 shuttle (€ 3.40). But direct trains are few, and the others take about 2 hours with a change. The coach tour visits two châteaux, with around 2 hours at each, for € 90 including entry. It lasts 13 hours. Chambord costs € 21 for EEA residents and € 31 for everyone else.

What to see and do in Loire Valley

  1. 01

    Château de Chambord

The largest Loire château, built for François I from 1519 as a hunting lodge, with 426 rooms of which about 60 are open. Allow 2 to 3 hours with the grounds.

  2. 02

    Double-helix staircase

Two spiral stairs wound around the same core, so two people can climb without meeting. The design is often linked to Leonardo da Vinci, who spent his last years at nearby Amboise.

  3. 03

    Roof terraces

The staircase ends on terraces among chimneys and turrets, with a view down the canal and over the walled forest park, which covers 5,440 hectares.

  4. 04

    Château de Chenonceau

A château built across the River Cher on arches, with a 60-metre gallery over the water and two formal gardens. It is often the second stop on the coach tour.

  5. 05

    Blois old town

If you go by train, the old town and royal château of Blois are a 10-minute walk from the station. An hour's walk before the return train costs nothing.

How to spend the day

On your own: take the 7:37 direct train from Paris Austerlitz, arrive at Blois-Chambord at 9:00 and take the line 2 shuttle from the bus station beside the platforms. Chambord from about 10:00 to 14:00, including the roof terraces and lunch. Shuttle back to Blois, walk through the old town, and take a train around 17:00. Check the shuttle timetable before you book the train, it sets the whole day.

Loire Valley in summer and in winter

Summer

June to August

From June to August Chambord is open until 18:00 and runs a horse and birds of prey show in the stables, on a separate ticket. You can hire bikes, boats or electric carts in the grounds. Chenonceau's gardens are in flower. Coach tours crowd both châteaux between 11:00 and 15:00, and on hot days the stone rooms stay cooler than outside.

Winter

December to February

Chambord is open all winter except 25 December and 1 January, closing at 17:00, and its rooms are decorated with Christmas trees in December. Many rooms are unfurnished and cold, the show and boat hire stop, and the grounds are muddy. With a 13-hour coach day or few direct trains, winter gives a poor return. Better from April.

How crowded it gets

Busy
Busiest
Jul-Aug and May weekends, 11:00-15:00
Quietest
Weekdays in Apr, Jun, Sep and Oct; before 10:30

Chambord is big enough to swallow its visitors, except on the central staircase and terraces at midday. Arriving on the 7:37 train puts you inside before the coaches. Chenonceau is narrower and feels busier, so go through the gallery first.

Practical: clothes, food and money

What to wear

Flat shoes: Chambord alone means flights of stone stairs and long gravel avenues. Bring a layer for the unheated rooms outside summer, and a rain jacket, since the terraces and the walk from the shuttle stop are in the open.

What to eat

Chambord has cafés and stalls in the small village square by the château, enough for a sandwich at lunch. Regional products: rillettes from Touraine, goat cheeses such as Selles-sur-Cher, tarte Tatin from nearby Sologne, and Cheverny wines. Blois has more choice near the station before the train back.

What you will spend

On your own€ 47.80–105.80
With the tour€ 90

On your own, the train to Blois is the variable: from € 10 each way booked ahead, about € 34 on the day. The shuttle is € 6.80 return and Chambord € 21 for EEA residents, € 31 for others. The € 90 tour includes entry to two châteaux, hard to match on your own.

How to get the most out of the day

  • Under-18s enter Chambord free, and so do EU residents aged 18 to 25. Bring a passport or ID card.
  • On the coach tour, check which two châteaux run on your date before booking, since the pair changes with the season.
  • Rent the tablet guide at Chambord if you like context: it shows the empty rooms as they looked when furnished.
